It is probably just your milk drying up and possibly fighting off a mild infection. Try to massage the breasts from the base to the nipple so that you are moving old milk toward the nipple...especially on and around the tender spot. Maybe try this in the shower...the heat will help the milk get moving. Then try to hand express as much of the old milk out...this is when you are really glad you are in the shower. My milk did the same thing, except eventually some of mine got a slight green tinge to it. It won't make your body think that you need to start producing milk again, but it will help move that old milk out. It worked for me (but I could still squeeze a drop or 2 or milk out even 14 months after I stopped nursing). After using this approach the thick yellow milk and the tender spots I had went away. Good luck.

If it is sore then you should definately go see your physician the sooner the better but there is definately no time frame for when is too late. How long did you breast feed? I breast feed my youngest for about 8 weeks and stopped right before I went back to work but 6 months later I was still producing milk to a certain extent but what you are describing sounds like the stuff that comes in before the milk. It doesnt really sound like anything bad but it should definately be checked out. And seriously you may want to have them do a pregnancy test when you go. Just in case.

I wonder if you could have a plugged duct or the beginnings of a breast infection? Did you stop gradually, or cold turkey? Cold turkey weaning can often lead to breast infections. Is it just tender to the touch, or is it a deep stabbing kind of breast pain? Is the tender area warm? Milk that is lumpy, clumpy, "gelatin-like" or stringy can be a sign of plugged ducts or mastitis. Does this sound like the discharge you are seeing?

Totally normal, don't worry about it. It's just your milk ducts cleaning themselves out, pretty much. Expect some colostrum-like discharge for a couple months, but it gets less and less. I'm going thru the same exact thing right now... for the second time!

Whatever you do dont take a warm shower. The doc really cant help you dry up anymore. Use icepacks thats what i did, it really hurts , it took me about a week to dry up, Good Luck!
