Its purely fiction. Though the film is based on a book called 'Heart Of Darkness', written by Joseph Conrad and published in 1902. The story follows a guy called Marlow through the Belgian Congo in search of a guy also called Kurtz. (My wife made me read it after I developed a liking for Vietnam flicks).

If you want towatch something with good music and is facual on the Vietnam war, try Letters Home From Vietnam. (I believe theAmerican release was called Dear America ; Letters Home From Vietnam).

The Colonel was based on Col Kinnard(? on spelling). I know that he was highly instrumental in bringing back traditions such as the cavalry hat and bugle (particularly for the Gary Owen march). A real eccentric with a handlebar mousache and the yellow cavalry scarf, he was loved by his men. I haven't found any reference to music being played by helecopters but have seen references to music played loudly from PBRs (as in the film).

Note: It wasn't Kubrick it was Francis Ford Coppella from a screenplay by John Millius so I assume one of them came up with the idea.

For the film they were originally going to use some other music, but then chose what they did use, well before the film was completed. Didn't Hitler like Wagner?

Pyops (Psycological Warfare) choppers were equipped to play music and make broadcasts to demoralise the VC, who whilst not stupid were very susceptible to supersticion.

Playing loud rock music during attacks and sieges (WACO) to disorientate the enemy or deprive them of sleep in now common practice.
