My airsoft gun says that it could be "fatal". Is that true? Has anyone ever been killed by one. Seems kind of impossible to kill someone with one even at point blank.

no!! no!! no!! listen--

Jon Hexuam was not killed by a pellet gun. No one has ever been. The gun that killed him, and the gun often used in action films, is a Real gun with Real ammunition (either blanks or live). Blanks are Real cartridges with no bullets. They have the propellant gun powder, but no bullet to propel. In the case of Jon, the cartridge had a bullet in it (they are all shaped the same). You can usually only tell a blank from a real cartridge by the box.
So are we clear on that? guns with blanks are Real guns, with empty cartridges.. think of it like a low sperm count.

Airsoft guns are not firearms. A spring or gas chamber launches a plastic or metal ball pretty hard. It's sort'f like a sling shot. A metal ball (being less flexible than the plastic balls) hurts more. However there is no explosive propellant and so the velocity is always Far less than that of a bullet. At close range a metal gas blowback gun can break skin and it stings bad but even the sting goes away fast. Unless you are bald no pellets will be able to break the skin in a head-shot situation... your hair will usually stop the pellet. If you have a hop-up airsoft gun, it is most certainly a spring-propelled shot and will not hurt anyone. It will sting and annoy the hell out of person or a cat. Although it looks like a gun, it's more like a sling-shot.

Now there have been fatal situations with people who have had pellet guns, but these situtaions were fatal because these people (some were children) were shot by the police. Most recently a 15-year-old was shot by Florida police in January.. but I think he lived.

Well, in the words of my mother:

"You'll shoot your eye out!!!"

Though Wikipedia does say:

"Airsoft guns are classified as "toys." There are rumors - driven by the realistic look of the airsoft gun - that these "toys" can be modified to kill. There are also rumors that the Japanese Yakuza and Chinese Triad converted airsoft guns to fire real pistol cartridges, but are limited to a single shot.

It is, however, impossible to convert or modify any airsoft replica to fire a real bullet due to the materials (mostly plastic), internal design (battery/gas powered) and construction that differ completely from real firearms."

On the other hand, here is a final word from Hobby:

" Final Word on Safety

When you are dealing with a gas blowback airsoft gun, be sure that you are in tune with the safety mechanisms at all times so that you do not encounter any sort of accidental firing of the gun or any other accidental moves that could cause *injury or death*. This type of weapon should be taken seriously at all times as it is exactly what it says it is: a weapon. The fact that it is a replica does not negate any dangerous aspects to the equipment, so take care with your gas blowback airsoft gun and follow all precautions."

You're asking people to prove that something never happened. This is impossible. The best answer anybody could give you is that there is no evidence to support the position that anybody has ever been killed by an air gun.

Under the right (or wrong) circumstances and airsoft gun can be lethal. You should treat it with the same respect as a real gun.

I don't know of any instances where a person has been killed with one, but I do know of a couple of actors and stuntmen who have been killed with prop guns, most notably, 1980's hearthrob Jon Erick Hexum who was fooling around with a prop gun and fatally shot himself in the head. There can't be that much difference between an airsoft gun and a prop gun loaded with blanks when you have them pressed to your skull and fire.

Yeah, point it at a Police Officer and don't drop it when he tells you...that would be fatal.
