The "Soul Music" that you are referring to is called that because of the hymnal roots that style of music has, it refers to gospel music, and consequently is a reference to the spiritual aspect I think you're making fun of here.

I think James was describing soul as... character of unusual fortitude, expression and God-like attributes. "Feel Good, warm and Happy Thoughts" type of emanation's coming out of a person that will make you "FEEL GOOD'".
