Yes, the Escape gets decent gas mileage for a small SUV. You can expect 20-25 mpg, depending on your driving habits. Even better is the Escape Hybrid, which gets gas mileage in the 25-30 mpg range, and maybe even a little higher. It's actually a pretty nice vehicle.

Well personally, if you want just a communter car get a diesel VW. Before going overseas I lived in NH and needed a 4X4 also but with decent gas mileage.
I originally had a 05 VW Touareg, great truck and it was perfect. Except that it sucked premium fuel like it was going out of style. So I got a 06 Mariner Premuim, which is the same exact truck as the Escape and Mazda Tribute.
I have had no problems with mine and the mileage is great compared to the VW. In bad weather and off roading, the Mariner handles great as well and just as good as the VW too.
If you get the Escape get the hybrid version or check with Mazda, they also share the same truck as the Ford and Mercury, but they give an extra year on the warranty - I am not sure if they have a hybrid version yet though.
Good luck and happy motoring....

I have an '02 Escape and I get between 17 and 19 miles to the gallon. When I read the Consumer Reports on it -- it said the '02 didn't have the gas mileage Ford had hoped. Newer years I think are supposed to be a little better.

The 2008 Ford get away Hybrid is a constructive automobile. The hybrid automobile in basic terms comes with an I4 (the right this moment gasoline in basic terms version comes with an I4 or V6), however the certainty that that's a hybrid and the blend of gasoline engine and electric powered engine will make the automobile enhance up equivalent to a V6. The I4 is an atkins cycle engine (as are many hybrid engines). those hybrid SUVs have been designed with the intension of saving gasoline that's the clarification for the I4. The automobile is equipped in 2 varieties a FWD (which comes with a $3000 tax credit) and AWD (i think has a $2200 tax credit). once you're looking in basic terms from a hybrid stand element there are in basic terms 3 different SUV that are hybrids. The Saturn Vue is equipped in a hybrid sort and is with reference to the comparable length and activities a V6 gasoline-electric powered hybrid engine. (i think the VUE makes use of Honda technologies and doubtless even a honda engine). The Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX400h that are equipped on the comparable platform.
