Next to each other. Not across, but one on each side so that we are along two sides that adjoin. It's more condusive to conversation.

Well, are you too formal? Then either end of the table after you put two tables together to seat 6. Otherwise, sit wherever you want so that you can enjoy your conversation with everyone.

Sitting close to your b/f is not a must. You both know each other anyway. It is the conversation with friends that is most important to both of you.

From a server perspective, across. If you are in a booth, DO NOT sit next to each other. Not only does it look like you are fondling one another under the table it is a royal pain in the but for your server. Thank you!

Across I think. Don't sit at the head of the table because you will be putting yourself in a place of authority.

With a friend, sit across.

But on a date, etiquette dictates the man should sit to the right or left of the gal, not directly across.

Depends on the location of the table and configuration of the restaurant. Sometimes across, sometimes to one side.

You are the paying customers. If there are two of you and the table has four chairs, you may each choose any chair you wish. That being said, "in general" most of the couples I have seen sitting next to one another are behaving more intimately than they should be in an all-age restaurant. I hope you are not one of them. :-)

Depends on how well you know the person and if it is romantic. A friend friend I would expect to sit across from me. My special friend I want next to me so I can flirt.

Either. Just sit down where you want! If you are trying to have a private conversation it might be better to be adjacent.
