Bipolar disorder (previously known as manic depression) is a psychiatric diagnostic category describing a class of mood disorders in which the person experiences depression and/or mania, hypomania, and/or mixed states. There are two classes of Bipolar Disorder: Bipolar I & Bipolar II. Left untreated, it can be a disabling condition. The difference between bipolar disorder and unipolar disorder (also called major depression) — is bipolar disorder involves elevated mood states and might also involve depressive mood states. The duration and intensity of mood states varies widely among people with the illness. Fluctuating from one mood state to the next is called "cycling". Mood swings can cause impairment or improved functioning depending on their severity. There can be changes in one's energy level, sleep pattern, activity level, social rhythms and cognitive functioning. During these times, some people may have difficulty functioning.

I have a form of bipolar disorder, I have cyclothymic disorder, and without my meds I can't even live a normal life.
If you don't feel like anything is wrong with you, then why did you go to a psychiatrist in the first place? You must have had some symptoms in the first place to cause you to seek medical attention. I don't understand why you say you feel that nothing is wrong.

If you've really been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, then your doc should've already given you meds to take. If not, I'd see another doc and get a 2nd opinion. If he gives you meds to take, you need to take them. The first few days on them will be tough as your mind and body adjust to the effects of the meds, but it will be worth it in the long run, believe me.

Best of Luck}}}}

BiPolar is manageable. My mom is bipolar and she didn't know it until after she completely turned on me and my sisters. She was volatile and hostile. I got her to go to a psych, and the doc made the diagnosis and put my mom on the right meds. The best thing you can do is listen to your doctor, see a psychiatrist often to adjust the meds and MOST IMPORTANTLY.....ask your family and VERY close friends for support. Tell them that there may be moments when you may not be too clear of mind and tell them what you want them to do in case you seem a bit "off." My mom had moments where she needed some kind of help, but we didn't know what to do for her. Ask your psychiatrist to give you those instructions. Don't be scared though.....bipolar is becoming more common and although different for everyone that has it, most people can find a med that makes them pretty close to what they were before they got the condition. Good Luck

No, it does not mean you are crazy. It means that you are Bipolar. You have periods of mania where you go extremely happy, giddy, impulsive....ect, followed by periods of depression. It is said to be over or underactive neurotransmission in your brain (ie: some things are a little extra and some are a little less than normal regarding hormones). Yes, You should take the medicines that your doctor prescribes for you. Try them, see how you feel with them. It may end up helping you, in some people, the meds end up saving thier lives. I wish you the best of luck. Ps....talk to your psychiatrist about it and they'll get you information about your disease.

Go on the meds BUT monitor your reaction CAREFULLY!!! I went on one set of meds that made me CRAZY. I would literally flip out and have violent episodes. Another made me sleep for 16 hours - had to take the doses in quarters (1/4 of a pill a day) to normal me out.

Keep abreast of your meds, illness, and new treatments.

I look at it through the words of the Great Dave Mustain: If I know I'm going crazy, I must not be insane.

First, who made the diagnosis. Your doctor? or some well-meaning friend? Assuming you are bipolar then medications will likely be a good idea. Bipolar used to call manic/depressive. It is usually more depression with occasional manic episodes.

Are you crazy? No.

Yes, you need to get on medications as soon as possible. I also think that psychotherapy or counseling will do you some good too. Consult with your doctor. Bipolar disorder isn't something that you want to leave untreated. People with bipolar will never get rid of the disease. It's incurable however it is very treatable. You are at risk of hurting yourself and those close to you so you need to get some help.

No, you are not crazy. Lots of people are diagnosed as bi-polar.
As far as medications goes- do you trust your Dr.?
That is key (I think) to taking meds. Trusting who is prescribing the medication...
You should do what your Dr says.

You say that you don't feel as though anything is wrong? I am curious as to what lead you to seek out help, or did the Dr just notice signs of it?

Bipolar means you have 2 different (or multiple) personalities.

It does not necessarily mean that you are "crazy". You may just have more severe mood swings than others. These moods can be controlled...

If you were Diagnosed by a Dr. they should have told you whether or not you should go on meds. I would consult a physician on that part.
