This would depend on your State since each State has its own regulations regarding driving. Check with your State's Department of Motor vehicles.
Generally there is a book that you can study from, that is available at your local Department of Motor Vehicles. You take a written examination, Normally a multiple choice test. Then you get set up for a practical driving test with an examiner.
Your state may require you to take a driving safety course. Even if it doesn't it is still a good idea to take one if it is offered in your area. Remember, you will be pushing around several tons of metal that is very capable of causing death or serious injury now. Learn as much as you can about it. Also remember that other people can cause you to have an accident by running red lights or being drunk or just not being attentive.
I commend you for asking about driving., most people just want to9 get behind the wheel and don't really care about anything else.
Be safe, be smart, learn as much as you can and take it seriously.

You need to have common sense and drive by the rules.
Some rules can be bent, but my biggest pet peeve is when people do NOT go into the intersection taking a left turn. Did you know if you are in the intersection, you have the right of way once that light turns red. It is because you have CROSSED the Intersection line. The only time you would get a ticket is for gridlocking (blocking intersection). But that is just a person's stupidity.
Oh know what a SOFT SHOULDER is.

the practice test they should have given you have a lot of the same stuff. its multiple choice, some pictures of signs i think, and some questions have 1 wrong and three right but you have to pick the best right answer. i know it sux. but if you do fail, you are supposed to keep your test and they have some of the same q&a's so dont worry. the retest is 14 days after and i think some of the answers wont make sense. most are common sense and some are gonna make you say WHAT THE ****! good luck and dont kill me in the future...

Go to a DMV of your choice and pick up a pamphlet fo the written test. Read it thoroughly and you are ready to go. In California, you would usually expect the test to comprise 36 multi-choice questions and you must not fail more than 6 of the questions, to pass.
