I'd like to give you a definitive answer, as you're no doubt confused by the other responses.

The simple answer is NO. HD-DVD's use a different type of laser and store their data in a more concentrated form than DVD's. It would be akin to trying to play a DVD on a CD player. Yes, the size and shape of the disc is the same, but they're two different things.

Some HD-DVD releases, as another responder has mentioned, are "hybrids" that are an HD-DVD on one side, regular DVD on another. There aren't a lot of them (but then again, there aren't a lot of HD-DVD's yet, either): So far, only three titles (Rumor Has It, Firewall, and 16 Blocks, all by Warner Brothers) are "hybrid" HD-DVD's.

XBox 360's do NOT play HD-DVD's...*yet*. They will in the future, with the addition of an HD-DVD drive that has yet to be released.

Many HD DVDs (both formats) will also include a standard definition version on the same disc; those you can play on any DVD player.
