I agree with the first poster. In some dogs, eating grass will stimulate them to vomit, but it's not true in all dogs. Our neighbors dog (a very fat, very old corgie) will eat grass and within ten minutes will be vomiting, my mom's dog (an italian greyhound) grazes in the yard for hours but doesn't vomit? She prefers the tall, weedy looking stuff - must be some kind of doggie delicasey (i know that's spelled wrong). I think it's just some kind of dog preference. THey are like little vaccuum cleaners, they'll eat anything and grass just most look tastey! :)

If your dog is just nibbling at it occasionally I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably curiosity. If your dog eats it often it can be an indication that he may not feel well. I'm not sure of the medical reasoning behind it but dogs & cats eat grass when they have an upset stomach. I guess there is a chemical in the grass that works similar to PeptoBismol for people.

A lot of conditions have been linked with eating grass but there doesn't seem to be a strong correlation with any of them. It is not a bad idea when this behavior occurs suddenly to check for intestinal parasites (do a fecal exam) and have a general physical exam done to be sure that there isn't a contributing disease. Most of the time there won't be an identifiable cause for grass eating, though. I honestly think that many dogs just like grass for some reason.

Some dogs eat grass just because they want to. Others eat it for the moisture found in the grass.

well some eat it when their tummies are upset cuz it irritates their esophagus and stomach and helps them to throw up. some dogs just like to eat grass and if the start as a small pup it doesnt make them throw up. i asked my vet this question and they said every dog is different and there are some dogs who never eat grass.

Well. My dog ate grass to help him vomit. So i suppose they are feeling sick?
But my neighbour's pup eats grass all the time and I have never seen it vomit before.
Guess it depends on the dog on why it eats grass...

I have been told it helps settle an upset stomach. Also i'm sure they get some hairballs too just like cats do. Cats use grass to cause themselves to naturally throw up hairballs, so I'm sure dogs use it for the same reason.

Dogs eat grass if their stomaches hurt. They might have eatten their food too fast or swallowed a bone. The grass wraps around the object in its stomach so he/she can vomit it up without hurting their throats. Don't worry, its completely safe and natural, if a dog didn't do it, they would get unimaginably sick and may even die younger.

They'll eat it to settle their stomachs. If they have a stomach ache, they eat grass which causes them to vomit and then they feel better- although then I don't want any kisses from my pooch.
