Brian Mitchell is probably right but I needed to correct some misstatements in Smitty's answer. Gerrie Coetzee did NOT win the WBA title on 10/25/80. Mike Weaver survived a vicious Coetzee flurry in the 8th rd to KO Gerrie in the 13th rd and retain the title. He did finally win the title on 9/23/83 with a 10th Rd KO of Michael Dokes. He would lose the title in December 1984 when Greg Page KO'd him the 8th rd. Fight fans will recall that the KO occured almost a minute after the bell ending the round should have rung.

Brian Mitchell. End of discussion.

A division record 12 defenses of the WBA title, always in the other guy's hometown.
Also captured the IBF title with his lopsided points win over Tony Lopez.
Retired with an excellent record of 45-1-3

I don't always agree with him but I have to agree with Brad Morris on this one and say Brian Mitchell and his 45-1-3 record and 12 title defenses.

Mr. Morris nailed that answer. Mitchell should be in the Boxing Hall of Fame.
