I've got the worlds darkest jet black hair too, and when I was in high school I tried to dye my hair a brown red. Never the less it didn't take and I still had black hair. If you are really serious about dyeing your hair go to a professional and have them do it for you. Since people with dark hair need to have it lightened first and then dyed the color/high lights added. This is something that I would strongly suggest since it is difficult for color to stick to some hair because of the make-up of some hair follicles.

But clue to you, people with natural black hair are usually lucky in the sense that they are usually very beautiful the way they are naturally.

in order to make your hair lighter, you have to strip some of the colour out first. Your best bet is a salon, but if you insist on doing it at home, buy some blondisima than cover that with the appropriate colour dye. However, blondisima ruins your hair and tends to go an orange colour

Please...go to a professional. You and your mom. Your hair has to be lifted to get black to brown. Virgin hair is different than already colored hair, but still has to be lifted If you do it wrong then you are looking at more cost as it becomes a hair color correction. You want your hair to be in the best condition as possible...so, do it right to begin with.

You should go salons first. My original hair color is black like you but more I dye my hair it got easier to get colors to the hair. But I really recommend you to go salon and ask them. It may be expensive but you will get a result you want. If you really want to do it yourself, get a blond color hair dye. That will give you brown color.
