Starting in September, I will try to lose a lot of weight. I am female, 5'8" and 230 with a large frame. I want to be at 120 by next year. Any comments mocking me won't affect me. I've been ridiculed for years by people offline; some jabs from people online won't send me into tears.

Thanks for positive answers so far.

"I'm wondering how you came up with the goal weight of 120. I am 5'4" with a medium build and while I am over my ideal weight right now at 130, I start to look too skinny once hit 120. Have you checked your BMI to make sure that 120 is a realistic target for you considering your height?" Hmm good question. I guess it has just always been my ideal weight, even before I sprouted up to 5'8". I know it is rather low. I guess 120 is the number that makes me most happy. Haha, I have issues.

I totally agree with "Tarheel Mom"
Please see a nutritionist or a dietician. They'll tell you what your proper weight should be for your height.
5'8" & 120 lbs sounds unhealthy to me. I'm sure that in the beginning you'll lose the weight, but if you continue to do that then you'd have to starve yourself.
Then you're going to have the nasty side effects: losing lots of hair, nails becoming brittle, hands dry and cracked, etc.
Go to www.mypyramid.gov and find out what you should be eating.
Do cardio for at least 30 minutes a day. Good luck!

I don't think so. I've always heard that after your initial 1-2 week big drop in weight when you start a new program, you should only lose 1-2 pounds per week. The idea being that taking it slow and easy helps you to keep the weight off better than a crash diet.

Good for you. It can be done but you need to get on a program of diet and exercise and follow it religiously. No fad diets or quick loss medications will work in the long run. Reduced calories in more calories out and you will succeed.

It would be hard to maintain that steady weightloss, but you can certainly try for it. Always having a goal in mind is good. Good luck. I know what it's like to be heavy, and then try to lose that extra weight. It's hard. Again, good luck.
