It could also be something going on systemically. Sometimes bad breath is just a sign of something else going on somewhere else in the body. Maybe he can have his bloodwork done at his doctor and they can check everything to make sure there's not a deeper cause. Otherwise tell him to visit the dentist and have them check for him. If he hasn't had a professional cleaning in more than 6 months and had his teeth checked then it may just need that. The bad bacteria present in your mouth that also are responsible for periodontal disease can cause bad breath. His dentist should be able to evaluate that for him. Good luck!

My son had the same problem but his ended up being his adenoids
They work for the nose, like the tonsils work for the mouth when they get inflamed (during allergy season) his breath stinks hes snores very badly.

But stinky breath could be more than just something to do with the mouth.

Is he taking any medications that could have this as a side effect? Or does he eat a lot of sweets?

If not, I like to rinse with hydrogen peroxide (mixed with a little mouthwash) before I brush...brush everything, roof of mouth, tounge..etc then I like to rinse again with the peroxide. Kills anything in the mouth. If that doesn't work for him, consult a dentist. He may have gingivitis.

When I had that problem I started flossing more to prevent the tartar which can make your gums rot and smell. And a tongue scraper did wonders. My dentist told me that it has to do with sulfur compounds and reducing those is the key. Here's a good website that defines what I mean. Beyond just focusing on good oral hygiene, I found that drinking more water really helped me.

make certain you sweep a minimum of two times an afternoon plus, and which you're brushing the plaque off your tongue, which some human beings are no longer clever sufficient to do. The tongue is to blame for undesirable breath in maximum individuals. you ought to stick your tongue out and use the toothbrush to scrub your tongue off out of your throat area to the front. Then gargle with water and in all probability mouthwash.

Something of a solution is chewing cardamom seeds. You will find them very refreshing - just keep some in you pocket.
You can buy them in a good spice shop. Just break open the papery outer skin and pop the black seeds into your mouth.
Quite popular in parts of SE Asia.

It could be halitosis, chronic bad breath. It could be a symptom of a serious illness or something internal. It could be a problem with his gums like gingivitis, or periodontis. He should see his doctor or dentist.
