... I feel that the problem with conventional mental health professionals is the same problem that exists with conventional modern medicine. It is primarily designed to treat symptoms and not causes of illness.

There are a large number of psychotherapists out there who are real healers, and who really help many of the people they work with. There are probably a larger portion of those who are professionally trained, who end up doing little more than simply keeping their patients locked in to a waste of the clients time and money ruminating about the past and getting no-where.

There are many very powerful tools available today which are not at all recognised by mainstream psychology,.. but which can help the individual to heal from their past traumas and or baggage. A more progressive therapist is one who educates themselves in some of these tools or modalities and utilises them in their efforts to help their clients. That is my opinion.

I have seen many individuals over the years who spent years in therapy and all they really got from it, was some "reformation" of their inner neuroses,...(if that),.... when what they needed was "transformation" and liberation from their illness.

Depends on what you mean by "quacks & fake". It is your responsibility to make sure that the psychologist or psychiatrist has a valid Lic., to practice in your state. And that he/she attended a university for psychology or premed and medical school.

I don't reside in the Unites States. I am a clinical psychiatrist an the difference between a good psychiatris or psychologist is if they really care about you as a person. Or they are just out for the money.

I consider my self to be an exceptional clinical psychiatrist for the following reasons:

If you have a one-on-one with me your will spend atleast two plus hours answering a set of 21 questions I designed to obtain an insight of your preliminary DX.

On your second visit we discuss your findings and if you concur we work together as a team to resolve your problems.

Take depression there is always a root cause and with walking together we are able to find the cause of your depression and work towards resolving the root cause. Medications will only mask the root cause of your problem.

Now if you are "SMI", serious mental illness, the odds are for sure that you will have to be put on drugs that will stabilize you and you will most likely be on them for life for the protection of yourself and others. (Plus the drugs will help you to live a quality life).

The real problem in todays world is that psychologist & psychiatrist in my own personal opinion don't really care and don't listen to one world you say. (They do manage to hear "I feeling depressed"). An they put you on medications with a ten minute visit.

You work out with drugs and your problems.

TAKE BACK

I apologize for my earlier response (see below).

I totally have faith in the PSYCHOLOGISTS and the profession. Especially RESEARCH PSYCHOLOGISTS. I find the study of behavior and cognition fascinating and important.

My earlier stance was meant for psychiatrists.

earlier response:
I believe that they are overpayed listeners. They do perform a service and the education that they've gone through qualifies them to bill you for it.

Otherwise, I've found a site that says "Psychologists are quacks".

and it goes on to say that you can "Know the vague crap they know in about a month.
WITH:
Diagnosis of the day (source, THE ONLY SOURCE, the DSM-IV): This is one
of their clearer diagnoses (but still can be used against people in a
biased way):

psychologists make better listeners, than psychiatrists. One's medicine is active listening, and the latters is hearing combined with passive listening and calculating which dose I need to prescribe for a particular medication to get money for my next vacation.

i don't really know the percentage but i believe a lot of them. some are using their education to help, some are doing it to make money.
quacks seem to use more of their 3rd dimension thing which is not always helpful. some people who seek after them even end up getting worse.

It's sad that you've had a bad experience in therapy. Maybe you and your therapist were a bad match for each other. It's important to find one that you like and feel comfortable with. There are good ones out there!

They believe they have all the answers. In reality they have bought into a false wisdom that when applied, cripples people and labels them as sick. It is destructive to the 'patient'.
