I'm thinking of doing an online Medical Transcription course, then when I'm finished I'd be working from home as a Transcriptionist. I have a preschooler, toddler, and a newborn. The class would be starting this fall and I think it takes between 6-12 months to finish. Has anyone done an online class and/or worked from home like this? If yes, is it really hard to find the time? Is this something I should do? My other option is to have my husband watch the kids and go take a course at the school at night. I'm going back in forth between the Medical Transcription thing which can be done from home, or getting my nursing degree and working away from home part-time. Any advice/experience would be appreciated.

the nursing option would probably be a better bet. Transcriptionists generally have to gain some experience in an office setting to gain a reputation before being hired at a home transcribing firm. it is kinda boring work too. why don't you seek out professionals in each field and ask them some questions before deciding? i dropped out of transcription after i decided it was not for me. i since became a pharmacy technician and will be working on becoming a Dialysis tech soon. night school was my route of choice, and at first it was hard. It did feel good to get out and have a life besides my home and kids. be sure your husband is supportive and talk it out.
Good Luck

I'm a mom of two little ones also, and I work, and I looove online courses. I can do a little when the kids are asleep, while the kids are watching a movie, stuff like that. I really think it's alot easier than following a structured schedule with little flexability (traditional classroom learning). You can go at your own pace online and take tests when you feel at your best (in the morning, at night, whenver is better for ya.
I highly recommend it.

Oh, and as far as the job thing...it's YOUR career, you decide what you want! Some people like working from home because they can be with the kids, that's true, but working outside the house might be better for you. Your kids will get older and get their own lives. Your career should still be rewarding and making you happy after the kids are gone.

I did take this course. I took it at a college. Its GARBAGE. Yeah, you will get training and all that.. but NO ONE will hire you without experience and you have to be able to dictate like 120 wpm. Its insane. The school offers placement help, but NO ONE calls the school for people..

its a just another way to sucker people out of money. If you do decide to do it, you will have to sell your services. meaning you will have to make up business cards and actually go to doctors offices and hand out the cards. Unless you know someone already doing it that is willing to give some work to you- its not worth it. I graduated over 2 years ago and i still cant find steady work.

When i do tho, i get 140 a tape. And they didnt care that I had a diploma.. they gave me one tape to transcribe and I did it correctly and now im the per-diem 24 hour turnaround gal. it sucks.

Listen.Take a normal job as everyone else.Your kids are young, but you can hire a baby sitter while the 2 bigger go to school.Since they become 7-8 years old, they are big enough to stay alone at home and that's it.
