Well you should be able to keep your plate and get your registration as well from the vehicle. In Alabama you can bring a letter from your insurance company stating that the vehicle was a totalled loss. This way when you buy/purchase a new vehicle you can transfer the tag. Also if you have credit from the old vehicle that the tag was on you will get some of that back (not the full amount though). Im not sure if all states do this but, Alabama does. Just check with your DMV. However, you will still have to register the tag from the vehicle to the new vehicle (This way the registration matches the car the tag is on.) I hope this is helpful.

then go to the impound lot and get it. if the car is totaled then they have to give it back. if u don't get it back then its destroyed.
when u go to the dmv to reg a new car u tell them that the plate was destroyed in an accident and they will give u a new plate and only charge u for the cost of the plate (here in MI its $5 plus transfer fee's) and the other plate will be taken of the books

I am not sure you can use the plates again but I do know my insurance company told me to take the plates off the car before they took it away. I have a feeling you might have to get new ones.

Unless you bought it & own the tag you have to turn it in.
You are charged a fee for everyday that it's expired or not insured. If your car is not in use call your motor vehicle place & ask before you end up with lots of late fees.

You're supposed to turn them into the DMV. Check with them though. You should have removed them from the vehicle when you found out it was totaled.
