You will never get a new car for that amount of money. A reliable used car with good gas mileage and sold by a reputable dealer will be fine. (New cars lose several thousand dollars of value the moment they drive off the lot, so it's not worth it to buy one.)

Check consumer reports for reliable brands, and look for good local dealers with used cars. (Check better business bureau and try to get recommendations from friends.) I would recommend having an independent mechanic check out any car you are going to buy, just to be sure it's not a lemon.

Good luck!

I can't think of any new cars you can buy for $3000...so it looks like you'll be shopping for a used one. A reputable used car dealer should be willing to let you test drive their vehicle and have it looked over by a mechanic of your choosing. You should be able to get a decent car for about $3000...just make sure you understand that it is very rare for a used car dealer to offer any type of warranty. Whatever you buy, and maintenance issues or repairs that arise will be fully your responsibility.

Good luck!

Well my advice to you is you can buy a use car but make sure its not a lemon and as for the new car think about the payments you have to make every month and basically its not yours until you finish pay for it. I would go with a use car for now and then later on get another preowned one becuase from my undertstanding the new cars loose their value as soon as you drive out that car dealer parking lot the car "depreciate". by $500 or more.

well, you're not going to find a new car for $3000, i can tell you that much. in buying a car, you want to think about what you want in it, as in options, age, mileage, size, etc. make sure you research the car thoroughly before buying it, just to make sure you know as much as you can about it. look for something that will last you a while, and don't go over the top. remember, this is your first car. most people dont buy mercedes' of the get-go. i would suggest import cars if you are looking for something to last a while. asian imports last long, and are of good value, if you are looking for a car with a nice options list, but you arent willing to pay a lot for them. european imports last just as long as your asian ones do, but have better performance than most asian models. its your choice what you get, but i strongly advise you: DO NOT BUY A KIA!!! they have horrible resale value, dont last that long, and have mediocre quality.

I don't think you will find a new car for $2000-$3000 and you don't want to get into debt if you are just starting out.

You can't afford a new car, and new cars lose their value faster than any other item.

I once paid $3,500 for a Honda Civic.

Stick with Hondas and Toyotas - around 90,000-110,000 miles.
