I just read an interesting question on here about tipping. I had read a survey once about tipping amongst races. It read that generally speaking, blacks and asians were the worst tippers, whites were the best followed by hispanics. Is there any credibility to this? Another survey, which has nothing to do with tipping read that the happiest people to the most miserable were in the following order: married men were the happiest, single women next, single men next and the most miserable were married women. What do you think of both these surveys?

I don't know about ethnic groups and tipping, but it seems like people who have restaurant work experience are some of the BEST tippers for good service!

They know that you don't clobber the server because the cook overcooked the steak....and they also can "read" a restaurant floor and tell the difference between slow, sloppy service and an overwhelmed staff that's deep in the weeds.

Ha. Interesting results.

I have some experience being a server but it was at a country club type place which, sadly, didn't have much diversity in its membership. The worst tipping person was a rich, white, male. There was one guy who would dine there every Friday night and always tipped $1.

A friend who is a server says that the worst tippers were Black people, but especially if it was a larger group.

As for the happiness thing. I can totally see that. Tongue-in-cheek response: married men are well taken care of so of course they're happiest. Single women aren't weighed down by taking care of a man, so they're happy. Single men are drowning in sorrows because they aren't being taken care of. And married women are doing all of the work so they're the most miserable! :)

From what I hear, tipping is a cultural thing. It is not customary to tip any more than 1-2% in European countries, if at all. In America, maybe whites are better tippers because in general they have more experience waiting tables? I have no idea as to why they are better tippers, but I have heard that before. I also know that no matter the race, if a customer has experience as a waiter/waitress then they are usually better tippers, regardless of race. Because they know the kind of crap wait staff put up with.

As to the second survey, I believe that too. Of course, you are dealing with generalities. I am a married woman and consider myself very happy. I am sure my husband is happy, too. He has someone to cook and clean for him! Some women do not like that role, it loses its appeal after time. To each his own.

I'd have to ask what is the client ratio color-wise that this survey was based on? Being black myself, I have noticed that not many blacks eat out, for one thing. Personally I eat out rather frequently & I do tip well, far better I would say than some of those who are regulars at some places & have been placed in the color category of best tippers. For $50 dollar checks I have left $10-$15 tips. I tip based on the service provided, there are times I've tipped when the service has been less than satisfactory. There is no one factor that determines who leaves meagre tips or why.

i have severl friends that work in the food business and i have never heard them break down tipping into racial groups, the things i have always heard from every waiter/waitress i know is that church goers are the absolute worst tippers! very few tip good if at all!

i have heard the survery about the happiest people and i'm not so sure that i agree with that totally.... i think happiness usually tends to change daily with most people depending on what is going on at the moment, and if you look at happiness in a big picture sort of way, i would think that married people with families would be the happiest and that single people would be happy but as much because most single people i know (me being one of them) long for that marriage, family aspect of life and thats what they are working towards.

Its my experience that lower income black men are the BEST tippers.

The worst tippers are (and sorry if its a steriotype, but its 100% true) are Jewish men.

Id say that the higher the income the person has the worse tippers they are. Thats how they got so rich in the firstplace - by being tight with their cash.

The survey about tipping does not interest me. Invariably, the people that complain the most about tipping are the ones giving the bad service. If they want tips, they need to provide better service or work in a restaurant that serves an upscale clientele. It's a dog-eat-dog world, and that is life. Every job has its drawbacks, and if the job does not pay enough and the customer do not tip enough, think about another job or another career.

About the second survey, I just think that married women are in such a habit of complaining that the survey is useless. Married men are in such a habit of putting up with childish, whining behavior that they ignore it and don't complain anymore. Just my opinion, but I doubt the survey was a scientific and accurate one.

I am Asian and me and my husband , who is also Asian, tip very well, as do all of our Asian friends. I am very happy, and have been married for 10 years, so I think the polls were wrong on both accounts, as far as for me and my life.

Please note that tipping is not customary in Asian countries, I've travelled quite a bit in Japan, China and South Korea. So Asian immigrants to America aren't used to it and probably don't get it right sometimes.
