Cats are very fastidious, his litter box may not be as clean as it should be, try to scoop the poop out of the box as often as you can and flush it down the toilet. Also, Replace the litter at least every two weeks to keep the box really, really clean. Sprinkle the litter box with baking soda to keep it smelling fresh. If possible keep 2 litter boxes in seperate rooms (not necessary) .If your kitty develops a bad habit of messing with his poop (or trying to taste it) it is time for a trip to the vet, he may have a health problem.
It is very unusual for kitties to try to clean their own litter boxes.

Your cat is like many others. Some play with the poop, others could care less. There are several things to look at:
First: Is the litter box full? Cats hate when the box has too much poop in it. I suggest using a clumping litter, it clings to and coats the poop and lessens the aroma that cats find offensive.
Second: Does the cat have plenty of toys to play with?
Third: Is the litter box in an out of the way place? Cats, like most people prefer a more private facility.
Fourth: Is the litter box covered? When we got our Booda litter box ( http://www.pet-dog-cat-supply-store.com/shop/booda-dome.php ) the cats are all about business, no playing. Just poop and go.

U'd B glad that cats R mostliy "toilet trained". They bury their poops in the sand box. So always keep that sand clean otherwise he might go digging again
Tip: Clean the sand box immediately. So if ur cat go digging 4 buried treasure, he wouldn't find anything u don't want him 2 find. Keep doing this so cat knows there's nothing interesting in there.
Tip 2: Cats pay attention 2 moving thins. Roll a ball of yarn near 2 him then he'll tangle himself into that. Shake something or move some small stuff in fromt of him so he goes up & catch.
Tip: If ur cat still goes in the box & digg, U can try burry his small toys in it. So he'll find toys instead of poops.

cats do weird stuff sometimes, though playing with poop sounds bizarre, because cats usually are very clean animals with good hygiene. I have never seen a cat play with their poop except to bury it under the ground or in the litter box.
I'm wondering if there was something moving in the poop. Try inspecting in closely, wear a glove when you doing this, maybe there are worms in there or bugs, gross as it may seem...

LOL that's too funny, and too cute. He may have been bored, but I wouldn't think generally a cat would want to play with his own poop. I'm wondering if there is a medical condition that is causing it. I'm no vet, but I've had 3 cats and none of them have played with their poop. I have found turds laying around because my long haired cat gets them stuck to her butt...... mmmmm... but no playing. Call your vet to make sure it's not a sign of something wrong. Hopefully it was just a one time case of severe boredom.

have you introduced new toys lately? how often do you play with him with a string toy? if you have a lot of toys, pick some up and put them away for a while and then rotate toys once a month or so.
