I have a mixed breed dog that I've had since he was 6 weeks old. Most people I ask say he looks part shephard, part husky, part rott, and so on. When he was about 10 weeks old his tongue started to turn black in the middle. Some say it's a sign of having some Chow in him but I just read that if it's pink to start off and turns blue or black it could be a sign of malenoma or cancer. Anyone else ever heard of that?

Your dog sounds like he is part chow. Many mixed breeds will get only spots on the tongue because they are mixed! He is only part chow, so this type of coloration is normal. I have never heard of spots on the tongue being related to any type of medical problem. I have known several dogs with black or blue spots on their tongues, and they all lived long, happy, healthy lives. In fact, the dog my mom has now is part black lab, German shepherd, and chow. He has short wiry fur (German Shepherd), webbed feet (Lab), and black spots on the tongue (Chow). Mixed breeds exhibit a wide array of characteristics because of their diverse backgrounds. If you are worried about your dog, the best thing to do is to take him to a vet, but my personal and professional opinion is that your dog is just fine.........Hope this information helps you and your best friend.

many breeds have speckles or black markings on their tongues, it is a genetic thing (chows, retrievers, etc.). Don't be worried.

our german shepherd has some big black spots on his tongue but he has had those since he was around 6 mos. old and I don't know what they are, we thought it was because he ate some cinders from the fireplace but I think they're from something else because they aren't changing. I don't think it's anything serious but keep an eye on it

If the animal was an adult and then the tongue began to change colors, then I would be concerned. Puppies do have tongues that can change colors.
