I have braces right now!!! I was just like you, I had heard stories about how painful they were, but I decided to get them anyway!!! I was glad I did!!! When you first get your braces, they feel kinda weird, and they hurt when you bite down for about two, three days. But then you get used to them, and YES they do become FUN!!! You can get all kinds of colored rubber bands to match your outfits or seasons!!! PLUS..... You can tell the difference when your teeth are getting straighter!!! And when you get them tighten every 6 weeks, sometimes they can hurt for like 2 days, and sometimes they wont hurt at all!!! You should give them a try!!!

Hey
Yes, I had the full works a few years ago.
To begin with, I had some plastic brace for my top teeth with just a metal wire across. It'd hurt when it was put on first, but after 20 mins or so it wouldn't be so bad.
Then I got the metal ones with the brackets on every tooth on both my top/bottom teeth.
These were a nightmare.
Every so often, I'd have to go and have the wires tightened up. This was painful, for a few days after because it was pushing on the teeth so much harder - and unlike the plastic ones, there's no let - up as you can't take them off.
Also, becareful what you're eating - I had a couple of the brackets snap off and had to get them glued back on.
When you get them removed, the basically snap the brackets off your teeth and then, from what I remember almost sand the glue off your teeth with some tool. Not painful - just pressure.
For me, the worst part of it all was, especially with the plastic ones/retainers but the metal ones too, they impair speech.
Not nice, especially if you're at school.
But my teeth are straight now, they weren't before, so all in all it was worth it.
Maybe have some neurofen after they tighten them up, it does help with the headaches/pain.
Good luck.

When you first get them on it's pretty bad. For the first week or so I could only eat soft foods. I ate alot of smoothies and ice cream. I also like that ramen soup and chocolate milk. At night I would take sleeping pills because night time was the worst!!! But after that it's not so bad. The tightenings are annoying..but nothing like the initial onset. My dr gave me my top ones and bottom ones at different times. I wanted to punch his light out for making me go though that hell twice! Ask you Dr. To put them on at the same time and just take one off earlier.
The maintenance is pretty obnoxious as well. Flossing is so hard and you have food stuck everywhere all the time. But after a while you just get used to that to (and your tounge gets really tough!) I never did get special floss.. I just used the normal kind and fished it through. You'll have to have toothbrushes everywhere! I got one in my office, purse, good friends house, car. You'll want to brush constantly. Once I ate some tuna then hours later a cantalope. I was fishing stuff out with my tounge (boy your tounge will love braces...it's constantly messing with everything) and I was expecting cantelope and got tuna...GROSS!!!
Just know that in the end your teeth will look awesome. And I don't know about you but I find straight teeth very attractive.

I had braces for 5 years. They hurt the first 3 days after they've been put on. They'll hurt for 2-3 days after each adjustment (your teeth have nerves in them that don't want to be moved). But, it's not unbearable pain, just more annoying than anything. And not every adjustment hurts.
But, it's all worth it when you don't look like a Jack-O-Lantern when you smile!

I have braces right now. They can be annoying sometimes. Especially when the wires poke your cheek. That's what the wax is for. Braces don't really hurt.

I had them - My mouth was sore after after having the braces tightened (once a month), but not much of a problem other than that.

I had braces twice actually....Yes they can hurt, but they are worth it in the end. For real. The pain really isn't THAT bad, nothing that you can't handle.

Depends on the type. soem can be removed, some are fixed to your teeth.
Most discomfort comes when they are fitted and then when they are adjusted.
Most of the rest of the time they are pretty much un-noticable, provided you take care of them.
