Many birds sleep on one leg. Because of the way a birds bodies are built, standing on one leg is easy--and it sure is comfortable, too! Some scientists say that it's also a good way to conserve heat, because it takes less energy to stand on one leg than it does to stand on two.

They do it to alternate heat on each leg and to conserve it for th rest of the body. However, this can also be a sign of sickness so it just depends on how often its happening! If its just when sleeping then its just because of the heat!

they put their head back on their back and use their own feathered back as a pillow and close their eyes. they can use up to 12 hours of sleep, although my poor cockatiel gets less and sleeps iin the daytime, which is bad for the bird. 9 hours is ok. they need total dark and quiet to sleep, althought they are able to get used to some soft noises, like key typing, they will not sleep trhough a TV or any variable noises because they are prey animals and need to be on alert for predators at night.

I have noticed that they place the other leg under their head or "chin".
Maybe they need to keep their head from drooping, thus throwing themselves off balance. It does appear that the leg on the roost is almost "frozen" while sleeping.
Wild guess.

They obvious find it comfortable! If they are falling asleep like that. Maybe gives the feet a good rest at end of the day.
