I have no problem with describing an atheist as "religious." It is a belief based on faith and therefore should be treated as any other belief.
I agree that atheism is a religion.

HUH? So you're telling me if I ADMIRE a pair of shoes in the store window, that I'm actually worshipping them?
That's just crazy talk.

Wow, you just singlehandedly demolished atheism... (sarcasm)
Atheists don't worship science unquestioningly. Their questioning is exactly what led them to atheism. Science makes sense to them, that's all.
How many definitions did you go through to find those, hmm?
Religion 1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
Worship 1. reverent honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred.
Quite different than your definitions, no? Let's look at two more...
Theism 1. the belief in one God as the creator and ruler of the universe, without rejection of revelation (distinguished from deism).
Atheism 1. the doctrine or belief that there is no God.
So what have we proven? More or less nothing.

Interesting notion, but your premises are a bit skewed. You assume that your definition of worship applies in all situations. You might want to revisit Encarta and check to see if there are more definitions. Otherwise, you may have blundered into the logical error known as equivocation.
Your statement "Atheists believe their (sic) is no God" might need some revision as well, as long as you're checking the dictionary.

Since you pretty much answered you're own question, I just wanted to add that the same theory/perspective goes with Satanists. Although they do not believe in a "good" God, they believe in the Devil, and perceive him as being God. Also, they congregate together in a ritualistic manner, read from a textbook, and so forth. So, although they love to say they are not religious/conformists; they really are. Take care; peace, love, and enlightenment to all. ~TheM0nk

atheist comes from the Latin word atheos which means godless
religion comes from the Latin word for religio which means reverence
Remember our culture influences language even that of the dictionary. Origins are very important when seeking truth.

I've always wondered why religious people are so threatened by and fearful of atheist and agnostics. It' as if someone elses lack of belief threatens the foundation of their whole being. It's really sad sometimes.

Atheism is not a belief; it is a conviction. And I don't worship anyone or anything...why should I?
