MS release all craps. Well, Vista's promises seems to be good, although I've never tried Vista myself.
Basically Vista would be the best Windows version ever, as promised by MS. So XP would be next, and the next would be 2000, and the next is 98 then last, 95. ME is out of the list since, it is simply the most crappy products ever released by MS (you know, experts agree on this, at least one renowned magazine rated ME as the worst product ever made in tech industry, along with IE6)
Vista looks promising to redeem MS's sins.

Get XP, it is the most current system and you can receive help for it almost anywhere. Dont bother about the older systems because they will lose support from Microsoft fast if they already did not. You need XP to run most programs starting now. If you can afford Vista and machine powerful enough to use it go ahead but if you are on a tight budget go for XP which you can get for less than $200 or get a new system for under $500 which XP preloaded.
If you want a free OS go to Linux.org and check if you want any of the Linux distros that meets your needs.

These aren't programs, these are operating systems.
XP is the latest version until Vista comes out in a few months. It won't be $400, more like $250.
Which one to get depends on what type of computer you have. More likely than not, if you get a new computer it will come with XP, which is a decent operating system. If you have an older computer it might be Windows 98, which is outdated but still works fine.
Windows isn't the only option. I have several Macs and a few computers running Ubuntu Linux, which is free.

it depends on what all you are going to do with your computer. xp is obviously the most up to date. however, most advanced computer users will tell you how they don't like xp and usually use 2000. I would definitely say it is between 2000 and xp. if you just use your pc for checking e-mail, playing some games, then xp is fine. 2000 is good for more advanced uses like file servers and programming. me is total crap. 98 is ok, but it is outdated as well as 95. i dont think microsoft supports 95 or 98 anymore, so if you dont know much about computers dont use either of those because microsoft wont be able to help you if you run into problems.

Vista is not released for general use yet.
XP Pro is the one to get - avoid XP Home, but consider XP Multimedia if you need all those doodads.
Dont go with earlier versions of Windows, they are OBSOLETE.
Alternately take a look at FREE linux from Novel at:

Vista is amazing. I am running off vista ~ not now but on my other CPU
Anyways, if you want to get a steady good version get XP
Vista > XP > ME > 2000 > 98 > 95
In that order :P

each working device require updates frequently. Mac, Ubuntu and XP. and each OS released interior the destiny will probable be extra reliant on updates, because of the fact the previous style of launch an OS and launch a sparkling one in 5 years is basically about ineffective. provider packs and enhancements could be the destiny. Microsoft wont launch yet another provider %. for XP, yet they are going to nonetheless launch protection updates to guard you. you are able to turn those updates off in case you like.

You don't want to buy Win98. Don't even know if you can at this point. MS no longer supports it.
WinXP is the lastest for us and it is great. It is fast, and offers "system restore" where you can set restore dates before installing any new software or hardware - just in case it doesn't go through properly.
It doesn't cost $400. Go to www.bizrate.com and run a search for WindowsXP Home (assuming you are not a small business). Just be sure you get a legitimate copy or you will not be able to update.
