My son was diagnosed with schizophrenia 3 years ago after he became psychotic. He was scared all the time and extremely anxious, but could never really put those feelings into words. You're partially right, it's a very misunderstood disease but they're learning more all the time. The medications my son takes keep him from being on the streets(antipsychotics and anti-anxiety pills) but cause him to sleep all the time. This disease is very complex and has a lot of problems associated with it that a pill won't fix, but medication is essential. At least he has the insight to realize he needs to take the meds, a lot of people do not. He has said he never wants to be that frightened and full of terror again so he will stick to taking his pills. You can read all you want about it but of course nothing really prepares you for the reality of this illness. My son is at home and managing fairly well, but not to frighten you, it's a rollercoaster struggle. He's had some addiction problems as well from years of self medicating, but we are working on that too. If you or someone you know thinks they have this illness, get help. Tell your doctor how you've been feeling. I wish that we had some idea of what we were dealing with because my son was ill for a number of years before his first psychotic break. Education as to the symptoms, especially for kids in high school, would be great, because the earlier the diagnosis the better the outcome. More openness and education about this disease and more acceptance and understanding of the fact that it's a neurological disease would be wonderful because while I consider myself a fairly intelligent person, I had no idea that my son had schizophrenia. That word scares everyone because there is so much ignorance and misconception about it. Ongoing research, better meds and a healthy dose of compassion are key.

Schizophrenia- A mental disease first described by Kraepelin in 1896 as dementia praecox, Bleuler coined the name schizophrenia in 1911. A group of mental illnesses characterized by disorganization of the patient's personality, often resulting in chronic life-long ill health and hospitalization. The onset, commonly in youth or early adult life, is either sudden or insidious (making stealthy progress). Blueler described four main types: (1) Schizophrenia simplex, the patient is dull, withdrwn, solitary and inactive; (2) Catatonic schizophrenia. (catatonia), characterized by stages of excitement alternating with phases of stupor (a state of marked impairment of, but not complete loss of consciousness. The victim shows gross lack of responsiveness, usually reacting only to noxious stimuli. In psychiatry there are three main varieties of stupor: depressive, schizophrenic, and hysterical.) and a peculiar muscular regidity; (3) Paranoid schizophrenia., with persecutory ideas in addition; (4) Hebephrenic schizophrenia (Hebephrenia), characterized by silly, purposeless behaviour, mannerisms and speech. All types of schizophrenia may exhibit delusions, usually of a bizarre type, and hallucinations.

yep your right, they keep on trying to find a cause to justify calling certain vague so-called symptoms which can incorporate lots of different types of behaviours/beliefs etc and try to call them a disease. The only evidence they can come up with is things like it MAY be caused by this or that or whatever, theyv got so many theories its funny. The one theory they missed out on is the fact that perhaps calling certain behaviours/thoughts/ways of being a disease does not make it one! doh! There is no actual test to see if you have schizo or in fact ANY mental "disease" no actual proper physical test such as blood test etc etc.. If you think im makng this up i suggest you google up things like chemical imbalance etc etc...
People just have different ways of perceving the world or have problems in living ie in their relationships, life etc etc which can be solved with a sympatetic listener or open minded person who doesnt label there ways of being, life problems a "disease".. and hey presto their "cured"...
oh and by the way its NOT mulitple personalities, people are only scared of this so-called disease bcz they dont know anything about it, cz if they did and i mean proper info not just pre-fed psycho babble crap they would realise what a fake disease it is...
i suggest you check out: http://www.successfulschizophrenia.org/

Actually, much is known about schizophrenia, it's origins and the treatment of. Sadly, society still has a lot of misconceptions about schizophrenia. If more people read up, they might realize that schizophrenics aren't necessarily dangerous, and that they don't have multiple personalities...
Below are some links that may be helpful.

In what sense? You probably won't find many experts on Yahoo! Answers, but there is a lot of information out there and many people understand it is a complex disease that goes beyond the more recognized version of multiple personality disorder.

because it's not widely understood. Also, its an 'ah **** diagnosis... meaning that when someone has so many mental problems that a diagnosis can't be pinned down they call it schizophrenia.
