My 21 month likes to have a sippy cup with her at all times. Do you think this is ok that I let her have it all the time. Or should I only give it to her when we eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and at snack times. (snack time about 2 times a day) Is it harmful to her in away that she has one with her all the time. When my mom was here to visit over the weekend she made that comment that it is not good that she was a sippy cup all the time. Why it that? This is a serious question. Please serious answers only!

I don't think your mom meant it was going to hurt her, she probably meant that she will get use to having one all the time, (like sometimes when children have special blankets, they have to have them with them a lot). I don;t think it will harm her in any way, however I am not 100% sure about that. I think the worse it could do is make her pee a lot, which means for you more diaper changes. Try to maybe give her a sippy cup at breakfast, lunch and dinner and at the snack times you mentioned but then if there is stuff left in her cup when meal time is over, put it in the refrigerator for the next meal. You could also leave one filled in the refrigator and if she seems to get tristy through out the day, take it out let her have a drink and then stick it back in the refrigator. Don't let her walk around with it all the time. I hope this helps. Godd Luck!

The only problem that I know is of possibly dental. My friend let her daughter have sippy cup 24/7 and at 3 years old she already had 8 cavities. I let my son have one during the day but never at night and he only had 1 cavity at 3 years old. If she had to have all the time you need to put water in it because that won't harm her teeth.

It is fine to let her have her cup all day. Children need to be hydrated all the time. Giving her water is the best option but adding a little diluted juice will do her teeth no harm. My nephew is nearly 19 months and he has a cup all the time and his teeth are perfect, he has nearly 16 teeth. I really wouldn't worry about this! Wanting her cup all the time is probably a comfort thing, she will soon grow out of it!

Hi,
Having a sippy cup with her at all times sounds like she wants it for comfort, not necessity. Try giving her the cup only at meal times and leaving it in the fridge for her to drink from when she asks for a drink. Children sometimes will hold onto things for comfort, NOT serious but difficult to break when they get older.
You could give her a special stuffed animal to hold and that can be her NEW friend.
Note: As she gets older she will outgrow the stuffed animal, my son had one he loved and when he was ready we through him out.

As long as there's just water in it, it shouldn't be THAT bad; but sugary drinks can be bad on the teeth, and even juice (which has natural sugars in it) might tend to suppress her appetite for the healthy foods she also needs to be eating. There's also been some studies that suggest that prolonged use of the sippy cups can inhibit the proper development of the tongue and lips needed for proper speech -- but that, I'm not so convinced of...

I think it would depend on what is in the sippy cup.
If you give her milk and then maybe one juice at snack.
Then water the rest of the time I think that it perfectly fine.
If she is having juice all the time no I would discourage that.
They don't need all that sugar.
My daughter is almost 28 months old and has a sippy of water
most of the time available to her. We drink whenever we want right?

I think the main issue involves her teeth. By constantly allowing her teeth to be bathed in milk or juice they never have a good period of time to be cleaned by her saliva...allowing the bacteria to grow on the constant input of food. The idea is similar to why babies shouldn't be sent to bed with a bottle - it can cause bottle rot. If you think that she won't give up the cup maybe you can start having it filled with water.

Sippy cups are not good for their teeth...especially if they have juice in them. If she has to have one put water in it...with maybe a little lemon juice in it for flavor. They have cups with straws that have a lid that flips over the straw that would be better.

sounds like it may be a comfort for her. as long as she has water in it, (juices can cause cavities) I dont see the harm. Does she drink all the time, or just carries it? Increased thirst may be a sign of diabetes.

I think its a kind of "security blanket" thing.

It would only be harmfull if she has juice in it all day long, since the exposure to sugars on her teeth will cause decay.

If you give her water in it & she has a balanced diet it is perfectly fine.
