I don't know why they are more expensive, they aren't where I buy them. Difference is that roe on ones still have the orange roe sack bit, sometimes called the coral.

roeless scalops is 1 inch round piece of white clam meat.
roe-on is the same but has a crecent shaped piece of roe (clam egg), orrange in color, attached to it.
few Scalops has the roe attached to it which makes it more expensive.
Scalops with roe on are more popular in France than in the US.

It is the orange thing on it. They are a sweeter taste. I just had some for lunch at a French Restaurant for my birthday. YUM!!!!
