I think we in America should have to learn many languages, not just Spanish, but French, Italian, Czeck, Russian and German. In Europe children learn several languages from birth. We expect everyone who comes to our country to know English from the moment they stop off the docks, but not only that, we expect it when we go to their country as well. Yes I think we should learn Spanish, or not expect others to learn English. This country was founded on many languages which is why we have no national language of the United States. And dont say that English was the first language either, because the languages of the Native Americans were. Why not broaden your minds and learn another language. We all share this planet, we might as well beable to communicate while we're on it.

Given the demographic trends, not an irrelevant question. IMHO learning of a foreign language (not necessarily Spanish) should be compulsory at the kinder and grade school levels. If we wish to be competitive in the global market place, ability to communicate in foreign languages is requisite.

I think it will eventually become a basic part of the school curriculum, like English is in Europe. I don't think Spanish will replace English, because the number of English speakers is still a lot more than the number of Spanish speakers, but I think that eventually they will be on equal footing in the United States, just like English and French in Canada. English speakers will learn Spanish in school, and use English in their everyday lives. Spanish speakers will learn English, and use Spanish in their everyday lives.

Dont see it as a bad thing. Remember knowledge is power. People in other countries, specially in Europe, know at least 3 languages apart from his mother tongue. I´m from Central America (Honduras) and speak 3 languages: Spanish, English and Italian. I´m starting German lessons next year.

It's a good question. I don't think it will be compulsory, but jobs might require it more and more. In the end it will be taught the same way english is, from birth. Kids won't even realize there was a problem. As for the adults? Probably not.

First we need to make learning English compulsory and see how that goes.
Learning another language is a good option for later.
