When the computer is turned on. A black screen comes on with a "boot master error press any key" then you press a key and it comes up and says enter boot device and press key...or something like that. Eventually it fires up windows again..but it takes a long time! We just re-installed Windows XP and before that there wasn't an error like this. It doesn't happen every time, only part of the time. Could the 200 gig hard drive be going out of it? We haven't had the HP computer a year yet!

Yes it's possible your hard drive is failing. It's also possible your disk just has some fixable errors on it. Run a scandisk on the disk to fix these problems.

Reboot your computer and Press F8 every second or so before the Blue windows screen starts up. Choose "Safe mode Command Prompt" When you get a c:/> type in
chkdsk /f
and press enter. Get some coffee or something as this will take a while. Reboot when completed and see if that helps. You can also do a
chkdsk /r
to check the disk for and try to repair errors on the hard drive. If your system is under warranty I'd avoid doing this and call support first.

I would definitely try the first answer but there is a very good chance your hard drive is ready to take a crap. Next time you get in windows back up all your important info asap. you said you just reinstalled but if you didn't actually refdisk and format the drive your just doing system file repairs. Find a free hard drive test software and run it to see if it detects any problems with the hard drive. I have a gateway laptop and recently it wouldn't boot up but the cd's that come with the system had a program called gwscan on it so I booted to the cd ran the hard drive scan and it found and repaired some sectors on the hard drive and it now it boots up like a champ agian. goodluck

In the old days you could just go start:run type command.com then type fdisk /MBR and your problem would be fixed... Nowadays I have to think harder. I know you start out with start:run type cmd press enter.... then you type fixmbr /device/harddisk0 or something like that... Check out my source...
