Last night while watching the Gene Simmons show, it reminded me of the case of the Wisconsin teacher fired from her Catholic school for having been artificially inseminated. This made me wonder about the Catholic views on this subject; do they object to the spilling of seed, or the fact that there might be masturbation involved?

A little bit of googling answered that question, but now I wonder - how does YOUR church/faith/religion view in vitro? Or if you don't belong to an organized religion, how do you personally feel about it?

Here's a snippet from the catholic rules:

In the usual practice of in vitro fertilization, not all of the embryos are transferred to the woman's body; some are destroyed. Just as the Church condemns induced abortion, so she also forbids acts against the life of these human beings. It is a duty to condemn the particular gravity of the voluntary destruction of human embryos obtained 'in vitro' for the sole purpose of research, either by means of artificial insemination of by means of "twin fission." By acting in this way the researcher usurps the place of God; and, even though he may be unaware of this, he sets himself up as the master of the destiny of others inasmuch as he arbitrarily chooses whom he will allow to live and whom he will send to death and kills defenseless human beings. I'm a Catholic and went through the same thing!

The church teaches about spilling the seed as one thing. But also, they have something about the naturalness of the act. Whatever. What I was told by my pastoral minister was that you can always ejaculate in a condomn that has a hole poked in it.

ROFL.

Whatever. We just did the old fashioned way with lotsa porn magazines. I wonder what they think about that...

I believe God works through modern medicine. I'm not ashamed to say I collected many a sample from my hubby at 6 am. And, any way I could get that liquid gold...I was game. ;)

For people to say that I should 'Let God's will be done'

I say to them,

Get off your cholestorl lowering drugs, like Lipitor, let God's will be done.
Get your hubby off his male enhancement drugs, like Viagra, let God's will be done.
Get your children away from their inhalers, let God's will be done.
Get your kids off their diabetes medicines, let God's wll be done.

See, it's different will infetility comes knocking on your door. When you are told to bury your dreams of having a child because it isn't "God's will". How is infertility treatment any different than any of the other modern medicine cures we have now.

As far as the Catholic woman who posted:
Are we the masteres of human life?
Is a child a gift from God?
Can a gift be demanded?
Do couples have a right to children at any cost?
Do couples have a "right" to children at all?
Are we free to determine what is good and evil?
Are God's commandments meant to bring us happiness or keep us from it?"

You could argue the same with any of the drugs I posted above. Have heart, give a woman a break.

I agree with the Catholic Church and her teachings on this technology. Christofer West does a good job on further exploring and explaing the details you gave:

" ... I'd suggest giving some serious though to these questions:

Are we the masteres of human life?
Is a child a gift from God?
Can a gift be demanded?
Do couples have a right to children at any cost?
Do couples have a "right" to children at all?
Are we free to determine what is good and evil?
Are God's commandments meant to bring us happiness or keep us from it?"

Christopher West, author of "Good News about Sex & Marriage. Answeres to Your Honest Questions about Catholic Teaching" does a great job covering this in his chapter, "I do, but not as God intends". There are 10 enlightining pages here which address each of above questions and more.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) takes no position on this issue. My personal view? God works in mysterious ways. If the parents raise their children properly and according to biblical principles, how the pregnancy started is a moot point.

My religion thinks nothing of the procedure. It's a God given way for a childless family to have children.
