I must say that I prefer the F/A-18 (although those bastards at the pentagon are going to use it to replace my beautiful pig of an EA-6B), and the F-16 Falcon. When the air force adopted the F-16, the F/A-18 (then the McDonnel-Douglas YF-17) was its competition.

Both are compact, powerful aircraft that can carry a surprisingly heavy payload, and, with tanker support, have an immense tactical range. The F/A-18 has a few advantages that appeal to me. They have the security of two engines (the F-16 has only one). It also is a carrier certified aircraft, so it is not dependant on fixed runways that can be easily targeted (this doesn't mean easily hit) by the enemy.

These aircraft are extremely versatile, and can take on any number of roles: air intercept, air superiority, standoff combat air patrol, close air support and reconnasaince. Their performance characteristics are close enough that they will be replaced by the same aircraft in the next decade, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, although the F/A-18 E/F models that are replaceing the F-14 squadrons will probably see extended service with the Navy.

That depends on the combat situation.

Air to Air Fighters, the F-35. Currently in production to replace the F-15 (Air Force), F-14 (Navy) and the F-16/F18/Harrier (Marine Corps) This Joint Strike fighter has the capability to replace all of these planes with minor modifications. It is a supersonic stealth fighter. Some would argue that the current F-22 is better.

Air to Ground, depends on the circumstances as well. If you are supporting ground troops, the A-10 Warthog, is the best tank destroyer in the world today.

If you are destroying buildings or stationary targets that are protected by SAMs, the B-2 Stealth Bomber.

Well, that is what I call a bad question. It's like asking "what car is the best one"... The problem is, you haven't specified what for.

There are several roles a combat aircraft can fulfill, and then the constructors will specialize it in one role or another... or try making it a jack of all trades (and, usually, a master of none). Like cars: a Lamborghini is fast, but it will fall apart in rough terrain - the place where you need a Landrover. Now, which one is better?

The answer is: it depends.

It depends on role to fulfill, on performance, on cost to effectiveness (or often the cost itself... B-2 Spirit is probably the best bomber build so far, the problem is even the US can't afford a full fleet of them), availability of spare parts, popularity among your potential allies (so they could take care for your planes in a need), upgrade potential...
A lot, lot of factors.

The A-10 Warthog. Ugly, built like a tank, can do aerobatic maneuvers that defy the imagination and take out enemy armor and emplacements like they were toys. I watched them at work in Desert Storm and I am still impressed with what I saw and experienced. If I had to have a second choice it would be the Harrier Jump Jet. Lands and takes off from a hasty built emplacement and has the battlefield clout to keep the enemy at bay.

The A-10. On defense, 1/3 of the plane could be destroyed and it will still make it home. On offense, the A-10 constantly wins the air to ground competition.

From a fighter pilot's viewpoint, the F-15 is hard to beat. Fast, nimble (especially for such a big fighter), good combat radius and tough as nails. The Israeli Air Force had one that suffered a mid-air collision, and though it was not easy to control, the pilot managed to land the Eagle. He then discovered his right wing was missing, sheared off in the collision. Amazing, and true. You can find the pics on the net.

Lots of military aircraft is kept classified but for the ones that are unclassified, I would say the X-35 JSF would be my bet but since I'm an Infantryman, my choice would be the A-10 Warthog.

It's a secret .
We didn't let on that we had stealth planes until we had something even better .
Makes the F-117 look like a Piper Cub , put a bomb in your pickle barrel from orbit .
