some probably - but hopefully only a minority.
French mathematician and philosopher Pascal (1623-1662), a very smart man but possibly a bit cynical, wrote: "if I believe in God, and God exists, then I'll have done what is right during my life, and I'll go to Heaven. If I believe in God, and God does not exist, then after I'm dead nothing will happen but at least I'll have led my life trying to help others and apply other Christian principles, which hopefully will have made the world a better place. Now if I do NOT believe in God, but God exists, then I'll go to Hell, which I'd prefer to avoid. And if I do not believe in God, and He does not exist, then nothing will happen, but I'll have been a worse man than if I had lived like a good Christian".
He therefore concluded that, irrespective of whether God existed or not, it was better to believe that He did, and act accordingly.
I guess this is the kind of reasoning that some people might make?

From the number of people who try to use Pascal's Wager to make be believe, despite the existance of Pascal's Flaw (which defines all the flaws in the pascalian wager), I'd have to say a huge percent of Christians know that there really isn't a god and are just paying lip service to get to hope that God will let them into jheaven. Joke's on them, there isn't a god or a Heaven though.

Some believe just to get...
Some believe because they have gotten aid and want to give in return...
Some believe because they were raised around it and never really give it any thought...
Some believe because they have carefully examined the evidence and been convicted by it...
Some believe because it is convenience for them today, but next week when its not conviencem they won't...
Some people believe dispite everything in their life that seems to scream against it because it is more than "belief", it is conviction to them...
There is no one reason why people believe or don't believe. It is a matter of individual faith for each one.

Sure. The idea of believing in god 'just in case' was expressed very well by Blaise Pascal in what is now known as Pascal's Wager. Basically he says that if you believe in god and he's real then you gain infinitely (heaven), but if he isn't your loss is finite, and therefore incomparable. But if you don't believe in god and he's real your loss is infinite (hell), and your gain if he's not real is finite. Therefore, he reasoned, everyone should believe in god, even if they're just playing the percentages.
Of course that's a load of crap and no one in their right mind would take it seriously. But Christians might.

I believe in God because it DOES do something for me. I see His work in my life every day. I see the person I once was, depressed, angry, empty, and I don't understand why more people don't seek God's help.

Rather, it is what their inner voice, their conscience that propels them to believe in what they want and choose to do so. Perhaps, some of their propensities to do so could have been derived from external influences from the people around them, like their family, neighbours, mentors etc.

I think people believe and have faith in God because they believe and have faith, I also think that until people have problems and difficulties in life they will call on him for it is believe that God helps people.
