I am in melbourne, florida and have been here for 8 years...why do people freak out when they hear hurricane? The news makes it seems so much worse than it is going to be, thats why i stay away from watching it. i love tom sorrellis(the metrogoliest on channel 6) he is in fact accurate and not out to freak anyone out. it was downgraded yesterday to a tropical storm that we will be getting sometime wednesday. do you think they will cancel school for my 3rd grade daughter tomorrow?

I don't care what the weather is, the meterologist are going to blow it out of proportion!
I live in Michigan and when there is a mere threat of any kind of weather, they are out all over the place: freeways, middle of nowhere, climbing trees, etc to prove that it is raining, windy, or show there is few flakes of snow!! :D
They love it when they have something to do and something to report to get people running out to stores to stock on food, water, toilet paper, etc. We end up with a normal thunder storm, a few gust of wind, or 2 inches of snow. . . . . . WHOPEEE!!!
That is what they do. . . . . and it ends up not being anything close to what they predicted.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NOW, you live in Florida. . . hurricane country . . . . . I am not used to those things, so, if I happened to be down there and a hurricane was a SLIGHT threat. . . . I would be up out of there in a heart beat!! The meterologist would have a good time with me because they would not have to tell me twice!!
Good Luck with that and the hurricanes and stuff. I hope you are doing the right thing by sticking it out. I would NOT take any chances!!
Use your own judgement on the school thing. I personally would want my child to be near me in case something horrible did happen with the weather expected or unexpected during a hurricane threat.

I was born and raised in Florida. Still live here today in Pasco County. I don't get too upset about the tropical storms and hurricanes any more but I do understand people who do.
They close the schools because of all the people who live in low lying areas and trailers. They will not withstand the tropical force winds and rain so they have to move them out. I lost everything, house, car and job in the no name storm 15 years ago and there were no shelters open to evacuate too and I lived in a house.
You get 4 foot of saltwater in your home and it is not the place to be.

Call your school, they should know if they plan to cancel early. I live in houston so I have been through a ton of hype about hurricanes also. After Katrina and Rita last year, people arent taking chances this year! I think people just have more respect for the possible streangth of a hurricane these days!

The news does blow it up, but have you eer seen footage from CAT 5's.
Trailers go flying and garbage and tree branches break though windows. The Ocean Surge can be 100FT, which means anything near the beach will be under a couple feet of water.

It is better to cancel school or let it out early than for parents to worry about whether their kids would be safe. I would not risk sending my child out when there is a hurricane warning.
