Sort of an oxymoron, isn't it. Why pay for and drink bottled water and then get ice out of a machine that's been carried around by kitchen help in a plastic bucket that used to hold lard.

Shows you have a good waiter/waitress that is trying to anticipate a customers need. It also may be the restaurant protocol for it's staff to offer the glass of ice with the bottle water. Also some times bottle water is not as cold as many Americans prefer and the next request to your server is a cup/glass of ice.

... You ask for a bottle of water at restaurants? Not just a glass?

Anyway, assuming I'm reading this right, they'll bring a glass with ice in it as well with the bottle in case you want to pour the water in and drink it from a cup. They'll do this with the restaurants who serve specialty sodas from the bottles as well, and on places like trains and planes when they leave you the can. Bars will do this too if you ask them to leave the bottle, most often. They're leaving you a glass, in case that's what you want. It's mainly a matter of catering to the preferences of the customer. If you don't want a glass, you can just ask them not to bring it.

They bring you a glass of water for two reasons: 1. so that your water can stay cold throughout the course of ordering, waiting for, and enjoying your dinner, and 2. so that you can have the proper ettiquite of drinking out of a glass instead of slurping on a bottle during dinner.

Hope this helps!

I think it is just habit on their part. I also hate when I order a bottle of water and it is not ice cold. Do peope think I want to pay for lukewarm water?

Thanks for asking the question, I have often wondered the same thing.

To make it cold. Not every bottle drinker is a super germ-a-phobe

They are probably trying to helpful, but are making the assumption that you want ice in your water.
Next time just say - "no ice thanks"
