Everyone should be re-tested for driving at age 65, and every year thereafter. If they fail, no more license, no more car. There are too many accidents involving these old people that can't drive. They are such a hazard. Don't you agree? Are there any petitions going around or anything?

Of course I'm not saying all elderly people are hazards on the road. (And of course I'm not saying 65 is elderly) I know there are hazards of all ages on the roads. But I just don't get why people aren't re-rested to maintain the safety out there.

Hmmmm, 65 isn't that old really in most cases....I would say that 75 or 80 would be a mandatory testing age and every year thereafter, yes..........I've driven with many seniors who are older than 80.
I do agree that all old machinery should be checked more frequently. Recently I drove with a man who was just diagnosed with the beginning symptoms of Alzheimer's. His doctor advised a road test..........he could pass, and then what! He could have a mental lapse and do much harm. There are limits to everything.
Doctors don't like to make these unpopular decisions (like revoking a driver's license). Family members don't like the consequences of parents losing independence and the subsequent responsibility of becoming care givers.
I guess the statistics will just have to speak for themselves as our population ages. On the other side of things there is a website for seniors. I think it's www.aarp.com and there is some information there about seniors and driving. Most seniors monitor their own driving and stop driving at night, and on highways. There are some however who are quite stubborn about giving up their "right" to something they were never tested for in the first place......they bought that license for a buck back in the 30's. Oh and by the way, I really think EVERYONE should be tested every five years or so......don't you?

I think if you do decide to test the elderly, you should test every age group. A test every ten years. Then, that would actually make the roads safe. Lots of people seem to forget how to drive and, if they aren't refreshed, who's to convince them they're wrong until they've smashed into someone? Maybe, medical limitations should be placed. Once you're past a certain age, your medical health should play a part. Can you move fast enough to avoid an accident? Are you in danger of having a heart attack? Stroke? Not just ask people to be honest about these things, but actually find out. I've seen people driving who could hardly fold laundry because they were so slow. That's not safe. For them or me.
I'm also adding that people under the age of 21 (I'm not, for the record) may get in more accidents because they actually follow the rules they've been taught and spend time worrying about them while driving. Some of the rules are unpractical and need to be changed or made more realistic. Or the roads being safer and more uniform in general might help that.

I couldn't agree more! I almost got ran off the road just the other day by a woman who couldn't have been younger than 80. I'm all for the elderly being self-sufficient and living their lives, but as soon as they become a hazard on the road, they should loose certain privileges.
My husband and I asked the local DMV about re-testing the elderly last year, and the only response that we got is that they have a right to be on the road. They dodged the question completely which to me suggests that they either don't care or aren't willing to take the time to change the rules.
If you do find a petition, I'd love to sign it....or maybe start one!

I could not disagree more with your statement. First of all I disagree with the age you have chosen. At 65 no one even qualifies for a Social Security Pension any more. The age is from 66 to 70. Many 65 year olds have to work just like twenty something year olds. Secondly you are discriminating by age and that is a gross injustice. If you base it on their driving record you would be a lot fairer. Next, according to statistics the most dangerous group on the road is from sixteen to twenty five years of age. Do we make these people test annually because they are proven to be involved in way more accidents than any other age group? If you encounter an elderly person who is driving unsafely, report them to the police department. Do not try the discrimination card against an entire group of people because of the actions of a few.

If you were born in 1944 your retirement age is 70, so 65 is a bit young, but I do agree there should be more testing done. I'm 62 and will turn in my license at 75, before if I am a danger to others.

I agree about too many accidents with the elderly, but then lawmakers will just say should we take teenagers off the road too. they have alot of accidents as well. which is true but not as many as elderly. they have them all the time and young drivers have accidents when traveling in a packed car or are not experienced enough. the elderly need to sit at home and the young need to go back to driving school. it will be safer for all.

I agree with you that elederly should be tested after a certain age, including an eye test. However I also think that young people below the age of 21 should also get tested more frequently because statistically they are the group with the higher accident record.

I would agree to some extent. Maybe 65-75 tested every 3 years, 75-85 every 2 years, 85+ every year.
