The cow is a sacred animal. Its milk and dung (they burn dung rather than wood, it's a cleaner flame) are of far more value to the farmer than its meat- and the fact that it gives birth to steers, which plow fields. However, not all Hindus are forbidden from eating beef. The lowest of the castes may "dispose" of the body of any cow that dies in whatever way they see fit. This usually means eating it. It's actually a rather efficient systems. While the cow lives, it provides food, fuel, fertilizer and farming equipment- renewable resources, then it dies and feeds the poor.

Not only though is there the idea of the cow being sacred, it's simply part of their cultural tastes. It's the same reason why most americans won't eat a cat or a dog.

Cows were a gift to people from the gods, and I think that Krishna (?) disguised himself as a cow for a time. I have an Indian friend who came to the US for university and while on the plane he decided to try the beef dish because who would know he did? Just to see what the fuss is about. Anyway, he still eats beef.

i m hindu.
hinduism teaches not 2 kill any animal. hinduism believes that every living thing has a fear 2 death, so any living creature should not b killed.just try 2 think abt d feelings of a creature who is going 2 die.the pain which an animal experience while u kill him.every living creature has right 2 die naturally than y kill him deliberately. y make a graveyard of ur stomach. god has given many other fruits and vegetables 2 eat then y should v kill animals. it is inhuman. this is an animal like tendancy 2 kill other animal just 2 fulfill ur hunger.
well hinduism teaches not 2 kill any animal but cow is of supreme importance. hindu's hindu's respect cow. there is a reason 4 this. after mother's milk , cow's milk is given 2 a newly born baby. so cow is considered as a second mother 2 a child. and in every religion mother has been equated with god. so cow is considered as a god.

the Hindus ....are actually considered to be the original Aryans that settled along the Indus valley....initially the Hindus used to take beef meat (both cow nad bullock)...but over the years after all the Vedas got written (RIGVEDA , SAMAVEDA, YAJURVEDA N ARTHAVAVEDA), they started denouncing the beef...maybe because it became a sacred item (due to decrease in the population of cow and the worship of cow....as Lord Krishna's companion).....however in some Shakti cult ( aform of Hindu religious prctice there is evidence of bull sacrifice on the 9th day of Durga Puja .....coming to the present state of affairs,...i have seen quite a lot of young docs / professionlas (the neo settlers ) in Britain taking beef meat.

coz in hindus cow is worshipped as a goddess & u really can't eat your god! The cow is a gift from gods (supposedly) as it is a source of milk, cheese, butter, clarified butter. Cow dung is used as a fuel so all in all a good source of food & energy. So u v got b less than intelligent to feed on something which is life giving! Rest it is a personal choice,

Because cows produce nourishment (they produce more milk than the calf needs) they are considerd symbols of mother, and thus the feminine aspect of the divinne. If one thinks of something as a symbol of their mother, they are usually not willing to let it be destroyed. Ghee from milk is also considered sacred, to be used for food and for ritual worship. So the cow is seen as more important alive than as beef.

They believe the cow is a sacred animal. They also believe in reincarnation. I heard somewhere, and don't quote me on this beacuse I can't even fill a thimble with what I know about Hinduism, that they believe that being reincarnated as a cow is something they strive for.
