Every year go to a doctor for a check up. That way if something does come up it can be found fast and taken care of fast. Sorry about you Mum.

The first thing I would do is find out exactly what type of breast cancer and at what stage it is Make an appointment with your doctor and have a breast exam along with your pap smear and take the exact diagnosis written on a piece of paper. Talk to him about your concerns. You could get genetic testing and possibly see a genetic counselor. I am not sure what the cost is and how expensive it is-not sure if it would be covered by insurance. I would also recommend monthly self breast exams after each period. If you have any questions at all don't hesitate to make an appointment with your doctor.

Being pro-active is going to help you. You won't know the answers until you ask him or her. With your family history it is important to screen you more closely.

They usually don't like to do mammograms on women younger than 40 but given your circumstances with so many in the family having it they may consider doing it. Your breasts are probably very dense and what information they could gain from doing a mammogram would remain to be seen and they might not want to expose you to the radiation.

There is also breast MRI. It does not use radiation and that may be an alternative. Its expensive and again with your young age they may not be able to yield a whole lot about information from the test.

There is ultrasound which uses sound waves. Ask your doctor about these tests. Don't take your health for granted. I would be scared if I had a family history of breast cancer. You have a right to be worried about your health but staying aware of the risk factors and what you can do will go a long way.

These tests may or may not answer your questions and probably might be limited given your age of 18. You don't know the answer until you ask the question.

If you have an interest in "prevention", as well as "treatment", send an e-mail to Support@PreventionProof.com and request their free DVD on oxidative stress and it’s link to breast cancer. Dr. Delia Garcia explains how proper nutrition and diet can reduce our risk while assisting in one’s battle. I've actually watched the DVD several times.

hi there
It would be a good idea for you to make an appointment with a genetic counsellor who could help you to discover the likelihood of your contracting the disease. there are genetic markers now able to be recognised and so if you really do want to know the answer as to whether you risk is high, you can be tested. See your local doctor and ask for referral toa specialist.

You can have a test run to see if you have the gene linked to breast cancer. If you do not, your chances are the same as other women.
