Time and time again I hear of weird beliefs that are completely unjustifiable, at least to my mind, by the scripture, so where does it come from? Are they willful mis-readings or what?

Actually, you would be shocked to know that Catholicism has a great deal of Judaism within it. Look at their churches...three main parts: the outer where anyone is allowed, the middle where the flock is allowed, and the altar which is supposed to holy and sanctified, which cannot be touched by the average person. This is the same pattern as the Temple in Jerusalem. Lavers of water.....incense, ringing bells, robes and bonnets for the head, sashes, chalice, ritual washings, rites, etc, these are all things which came from the Old law of Moses, or Torah.

Universal (Catholic) religion is the first split off the Early New Testament Church you read of in Acts. They later split into two parts, Eastern (Greek) and Roman Catholic. During the beginnings of universal catholicism, you have Judaizers who wanted to see more of the Law of Moses brought BACK into Christianity. Foods forbidden on certain days, feasts, festivals, etc. Catholicism would do many things to appease the people. Paganism also became prominent later on, with such evidence as "All Saints Day" on Nov 1, which follows October 31 to counteract all the pagan ideas which had been allowed into the church.

What has happened is that the Governments of the times when Roman Catholic was started, were afraid of the power that those so called Christians had. They were taking ownership of everything and giving it away to each other like crazy people. The government convinced the church leaders of the time to set down and come up with a comprehensive plan to keep control of the church, so to speak. They formed a government controlled church and with it they incorperated a lot of laws to govern it. The laws were mostly borrowed from the Jewish Law, but when the politicians and the church leaders sat together to form a governmental body, many other docternal inventions took place. It was no longer the doctern left by Jesus, It was a religious doctern. Almost all churches that are traditional are out of this mold. Unless the church are born again, blood of Jesus, Biblical based, I would run. Jesus is Lord!

A lot of Catholic traditions are ones which were absorbed into the church from other religions, to make Christianity more palatable. Christmas is on December 25 because that was they day the Romans celebrated the birth of Mithros, the soldier's god. Who cares--it's still a god, right? Easter bunnies and Easter eggs are left over from absorbing a fertility celebration in Germany. The Christmas tree was also from a German celebration. Even Halloween was Christianized--it was originally a pagan worship day (Samhain), because they believed that was the day the barrier between the dead and the living was the weakest, and they were trying to protect themselves. The Christians convinced them that it was actually a celebration in honor of the dead, just as the next day was a celebration of the saints. Samhain became All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween, and the rest is history.

mesun1408,
If you get a chance, read a book called, The Two Babylons, by Alexander Hislop.

The book has become under fire recently, but I believe unfairly. It explores many of the pagan ritual that is involved in the RCC.

They have tradition. And they have 'religion' down pretty good. So with the slightest explanation, they can get the most learned men to go along with them. There are supposed to be the harlot spoken about in the Bible. I think that Proverbs 7:6 -27 is referring to her as well. That would make that part of Proverbs prophetic.

Most of the RC practices are Biblically based. But some are down to Church Tradition - made up by men often for good reasons initially.

When the Roman Empire was colapsing, and the Christian wave grew larger. The Romans incorporated their gods into Christianity
in a desperate attempt to save their pegan beleifs, and presto... Roman Catholics.

The weird stuff comes from all the weird Popes down through the ages of the church. They all wanted to add something to their religion to suit themselves. And isn't that convenient since the Pope is considered God on Earth by the Catholics.

You're probably hearing of these "weird beliefs" from people who have a great many misconceptions about Catholicism.

Which "weird Catholic notions" are you referring to?

I'd like to know. PM me. Don't just leave an "additional comment" on your question because I doubt I will be able to see it. PM me instead.

They are just trying to keep control and power.

Has anyone on here ever read the book "1984"? Same principle.

Common hate: Satan.
Common fear: Hell.
Pushing down individualism: a dress code.
Subduing anything they cant control: sex drive, murder, even thought crime has been punished in that religion.

Ah I love the simplicity of Nature.
