Sometimes when animals get older, they lose the ability to control certain bodily functions. It happened to my dog when he got to old as well, and as the person above said, it was a sign he had to be put down. Have you tried taking him to the vet? They might be able to do something for him, poor guy. He's probably upset about this as well.

Poor guy. One of my friends had a darling german shepard that was about 14 when this started happening. It is actually a symptom of dementia, yes it does happen to animals also. She was able to keep her on meds, which were very expensive, for a few months; but finally had to have her put to sleep as she was even too weak to stand on her own, my friend was actually brushing her one day, very gently and she just fell over. She had actually been carrying her up and down the stairs to go to the bathroom for months also, and that was no easy task as the dog was over 65 pounds. I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, I love my pets also, one of my cats is trying to get me to play and pay attention while I am trying to type this, and my dog is under my feet...but sometimes when pets are older, you have to make that tough decision, and it will hurt; but I could not let an animal suffer. You need to take your dog to the vet as soon as possible, so you will be certain what is going on. God bless you both!

We had a very old dog that lost control of her bowels too. She NEVER went in the house before. The vet told us this was a sign that it was time to put her down. I'm sorry, you should take him to the vet immediately and see what they say.

You need to get your dog to the vet so they can check him out. Older animals sometimes lose control of their bowels. You might even consider getting him a doggie diaper.

Sound like he is getting senile and doesn't quite know when he is still going. He might just be losing his concentration and starts wandering off before he is finished. Just love him anyhow. 13 is a good, long dog life.

sounds like you need to seek the advice of your vet. That sounds like a serious issue and not very pleasant for you or your dog.

Have you talked to your vet about reconstructing or tightening his sphincter muscle? this may be an option - good luck
