So you need to have a 'Database management system' called DMS applications, there are many DMS available in market, but most commonly 'Microsoft Access' is used for this purpose.
If you are working on a small scale 'Microsoft Excel' will do the work for you.

And as far as downloading is concerned, it is a bulky program, and Microsoft has got its copyrights, so no one can upload it to be used freely. So you have to buy one copy of Microsoft Office (that includes MS Excel, MS Word, MS Access, MS Power Point, MS Frotpage)

Since your new to the computer, easier the better.

Excel by Microsoft is pretty easy but not very cheap.
You can list your collection and add as you need, it's a spreadsheet, not a database but for your first application it may work well.

Otherwise, maybe there is already a program for your specific collection, whatever it is,

Dowload sites I frequent are:
www.downloads.com
www.softpedia.com

Good luck!

A spreadsheet would do and there are various available including one built into open office.

A database would be better but may be beyond your skill level at this stage and are not as easy to come by for free
