I've not read a catholic bible, but I know from the Holy Bible that the wives of Jacob were Leah and Rachel. They were sisters, daughters of Laban his uncle. He worked seven years for Rachel because he loved her and Laban tricked him and gave him Leah first. He had to work another seven years for Rachel.

He had two wives and he had their two hand-maidens.
He had children by all four. If you are making a pitch for monogamy, monogamy was instituted as a required practice in the early Christian church. It was not required as such in the old testament, although there are some passages even there in the OT that make it strongly encouraged. Monogamy was obviously not observed strictly in the Old Testament, and the fact was not held as highly important. A person's promises and covenants with God are more important.
God wants us all to keep our promises and covenants. Adultery is technically the breaking of a covenant, not strictly the marriage covenant, but any covenant.
God keeps His covenant, and even revised it to forgive us where we broke covenant with Him.

Is it different than in the protestant bible? I thought he had 4 wives. Rachel, Leah, Bilhah, and Zilpah. (B and Z were handmaids given to Jacob to concieve on behalf of Rachel who was barren, but Jacob did marry B.)
