I started letting mine go at the age of 5. I stood in front of the door and gave everyone a bad look if they tried to get in. They were learning independance at school and I needed to enforce it and learn it for myself as well.
They are 9 and 12 and they both know that I wait on them. Never too careful.

Well, you are correct that you should be concerned about possible dangers. I would say it should be when he's old enough to yell or run out of there.
I'll tell you something else that might sound silly. Few people in today's world would bat an eye if a grown woman walks into a man's restroom, especially to accompany a child. In many department stores, you can see women walking into men's dressing rooms with impunity, and when I once complained about it, the store people acted as though I was the one who was weird.

five or six. I'm no parent, but six was the age I wasn't allowed in the ladies' locker room anymore.
Oh wait, you're asking because.. hmm, I really don't think you have anything to worry about. As long as the kid is potty trained and knows to wash his hands, he should be fine. It's not like someone's going to kidnap your kid and walk out of the bathroom while you're waiting outside without you noticing.

you may send him in alone at 6 or 7 but i would be waiting right outside and if he was not out in a few minutes i would be right in there....so do not leave young boys to go by thereself without you being right outside the door...i have grandaughters that will not go to the restroom alone and they are about 6 and 7 years old...so it is when they feel comfortable about it themselves and i would still be outside the door...

Arm him with a can of mace and send him in by age eight. Any younger and most likely looking for trouble. Peace - - - and NORMAL businesses would provide private restrooms not cattle pens !!!

Depends on where. If it is a small place where you can "monitor" who is going in and out I would say 7. If you are talking about a public rest area or other scary place I would say 10. Too many creeps in the world..

my son started griping about having to go the ladies room about the age of 6... but i made him suffer thru it til about the age of 8.
i just stand at the door and watch those coming and going and then if he seemed to be taking too long i'd crack the door and holler for him to respond....
your apprehensiveness to allow him to be separated is normal, but don't push him to go into the ladies room, allow him some privacy. he'll respect you more for it.

Don't let the media's sexual predator hysteria scare you. They just want advertising dollars through scaring people into warching. I was going alone when I was 5 and I was fine.

well, as long as your sure he can do everything himself. if he needs help of any kind still, don't send him alone. also, be sure he's comfortable going in alone. don't worry about that man...there's only one exit to the bathroom, and you're standing by it.
