I think your girlfriend or wife is a very lucky lady. Just for the record though, most of us just think the toilet just looks gross with the seat up, at least most of the girls I know.

I went to a house where the flush "button" was behind the toilet lid, which means that you have to close the whole thing to flush. I think that's a good idea.
Problem is when people take a sh*t and don't check if everything is gone (my flatmate - I have to look at sh*t every morning). That's gross. That's way worse than people not putting the lid down!

That's a very good idea.
My husband almost always closes the lid with the seat. He learned how important it is to at least put the seat down for me when we were first married, and I fell into the toilet when I got up in the middle of the night to go pee. I was screaming, and he thought I got hurt. LOL - it was just my pride that got hurt, as I sat in the toilet.

If I can't get my husband to just put the lid down after he's used the bathroom.. how in the hell am I going to convince him to put the ENTIRE lid down after using the bathroom?? You have a nice idea there, but the logic is a little flawed.
By the way.. I don't care if the lid is down or not. I am one woman in a house of 3 guys who pee standing up.. and it's not that big of a deal for me to put the lid down. I never really understood the whole fighting about the toilet lid thing anyways. He has to put it up whenever he goes, why are you complaining about him putting it down?

It's a very good thought. But, how many people are actually committed to taking extra time to close the whole toilet? Personally, I am not really sure that the whole men-leaving-the-seat-up controversy is controversy at all. My husband does it every once in a while and it doesn't really bother me. But, the idea of closing the toilet to prevent the spread of germs is a comforting one. I second your motion.

You have answered your own question! The lid and seat should be closed at all times other than when someone is using it. In my house, we do not make this a gender issue, rather it is a human issue. Everyone must put down both lid and seat. End of controversy. Just do it!

Its a great idea of covering the lid as well but how many men have the time to do that.
If men are even lazy to put the seat down is it the lid that they will remember to put down.
But if you are taking an initiative to do it I have to make sure I let my hubby know as well so that he can do it also.

How about this high tech solution?
Install an alarm on the thrown. When the seat is down, the sensor has a green light. When the seat is up, the light turns red. If the seat is up for more than 90secs, an alarm goes off.

Yep, that's a perfect solution. That's why we've been using it for years where I come from, lol. Glad to see others catching up. :)
On top of the advantages you mentioned, it keeps the smell in the toilet instead in the whole room, and everyone has a reason to try to keep the toilets clean.

Have always agreed this to be an acceptable solution. Although in the words of newspaper columnist Ann Landers, "A gentleman knows and does not need to be told that the lid goes down after use."
