It depends on which police department - here in small town Maryland - ours are great, they interact in the community, treat the citizens with respect and do their jobs. I think most police officers are like that - but if you treat them badly, they will respond in kind. They are not working against the public, but for them and with them.

The comments speak for themselves. The police want good relations but they often encounter people who see nothing but the uniform and already hate them. The police often feel they are targets. They always have to be professional and polite regardless. When was the last time you went into a restaurant and sat with the police officer who was having lunch. You probably sat on the other side of the room or got your food to go. Its a lonely life but somebody has to do it. The old friends are no longer friends and you have to watch the guy behind the counter because he hates cops and you will get the special sauce. Law enforcement officers accept the reality that often goes with the job. Is there a point where you are willing to meet them halfway, or is it, they are all the same.

I have had police as friends and they were wonderful people
I think on the job it is different for them so many are shot at just for stopping a car for a simple traffic violation
I also think there are a lot of good police men and women who just want to help and keep our communities safe and interact with the people in their communities
There are bad cops as in any profession TV shows only the bad of everything

I think it is rare for many officers on the street to be concerned about good community relations. Most seem to see everyone as a threat, as opposed to any potential allies.
I was raised as a kid that if I was lost to seek out a police officer for help. As an adult, I'll take my chances on my own in most cases, even beyond being lost.

I think we do try and build good relations with the public because if we build those good relations with the public and there is a major crime in the community that one person that you have built a good repore with might give you some helpful information to solve the crime or at least lead you in the right direction.

Yes. Think about it. Do the cops kids attend the same schools as everyone else' kids? Do the cops shop at the same stores? Do the cops use the same banks as everyone else?
Who pays for the police? If they go around trying to make everyone angry, how long do you think they would be funded?

I have met exactly 1 nice cop my whole life. i am not a criminal, but i guess to the cops i look like one. i am treated with no respect by the police. but since i'm not a criminal i could care less about the police. I would probly not call them ever unless i needed a police report for insurence.
they are, by far, just power hungry losers taking their fustrations out on everyone they meet.

I think Police tend to treat everybody as a possible threat regardless if it was a screaming 80 year woman.
When you are given a gun, a pepper spray, handcuffs, and a very fast car as your work tools, you will feel a sense of power over other people. You will feel that you could giver orders to who ever you want and expect people to comply.
The point of creating a police force was to protect the innocent and the weak. They are supposed to be public servants not tough guys walking with guns.
