This has happened to me several times throughout my life. I am sleeping when suddenly i wake up because I feel this evil presence. I can't open my eyes (and I don't try to either) but I can't move or speak. It's like I'm paralyzed. But I feel this fear so I start praying. After a while I just fall back to sleep.

it is sleep paralysis babe ... and although very very scary it is harmless
when we go to sleep , the body releases a hormone to stop us acting out our dreams .. if we are awake when it is released or wake before it wears off , it can produce the effects you mentioned
it is commonly accompanied by something called hypnagogic state , which is like waking dreams and while the mind is in the confused state .. these hallucinations ( images , smells , sounds etc ) have been commonly reported to be demons , aliens , witches etc
there are a few techniques to bring yourself out of it like wiggling your toes and the rest of the body will come to...
but if it is severe your GP will be able to help you more

Sleep paralysis. Basically it means that your mind wakes up but your body doesnt. Its a lot more common than youd think and totally harmless - although it is a bit scary.

The best thing to do if it happens again is remember that it is just temporary and try to go back to sleep.

Every culture has its own myths about S.P. Because of these myths different things happen to people in different countries. In the Amazon people halucenate the there is a goblin type creature luring over them. In Ireland the condition is called "Old Hag" because it is sometimes acompanied by a feeling of preassure on your chest - a lot of people who have heard the term "Old Hag" for some reason "see" an old lady sitting on their chest.

What you experience during S.P. it totally culture related. The S.P. manifest itself into whatever fairy tale or myth that is associated to it by your culture.
