is electron- an invention or discovery??

can anyone confirm me which is the correct statement, was electron an invention or a discovery? and it would be nice if you could explain your reasoning in detail!!

What a great question! I see from the answers you've already received that you've gotten the standard answer -- and almost surely the one your teacher wants. However, if you really go into it, the situation is not nearly so simple. As long as it was thought that electrons were actually tiny little particles circling around a nucleus (or sometimes flowing through a wire) like planets around the sun, then sure, finding them was definitely a "discovery." Now, though, quantum physics tells us that elementary particles, such as electrons, are not really "there," or anywhere for that matter, UNTIL WE MEASURE THEM! Up to then, they exist as a "probability wave," which implies that their "actual" (whatever that now means) location and momentum could be anything at all, but is only more likely to have some certain values than others. In this sense, "the electron" is a "contstruct," a "way of thinking about something," that makes it easier for us dumb humans to conceive of it than through a bunch of tensor equations that only physicists can read and only Stephen Hawking REALLY understands! If all that's the case, as it indeed seems to be, then the electron was truly INVENTED, not DISCOVERED!

electrons are supercharged negative particles surrounding the nuclei of an atom, i mean in fact we are all mostly open space, but they are so tiny that we are solid. the charge on an electron is negative and there are layers it goes something like this

i forget if it goes higher after that, but they circle the proton and neutron in the electron cloud. the charges are so powerful that electrons are held together by the protons and the electrons' charges (the neutrons dont really do much except balance the weight) and they dont get smooshed together with other atoms because of the super strong charge of the two negative charges.

So electrons were not invented.......they were discovered by some English Scientists. I don't know their names but I am sure that they were two people who discovered electrons, neutrons and protons.

An INVENTION - the conclusion of existing of the electron came out from some physical equations. But this is college math and physics. The didactical way of representing are some kind of revolving balls around another (proton) balls - which is not the physical real picture of it.
