We are a fraternal organization that is dedicated to charitable work and to improving ourselves and our communities. The requirements to join us are that you must be a male adult who believes in a higher power. Most Masons in the US as Christian, but we also have members who are Jewish, Muslim, Hindi, and a few others.
In our meetings, we discuss the business of the lodge such as who to donate money to, what activities to plan, and we also handle the initiation of new members. We NEVER discuss politics or religion in meetings (sorry those of you who think we discuss how to rule the world).
Some people call us a secret society, but we are not. If we were, I would not be answering your question right now. Members proudly wear shirts and hats, or have rings or even decals on their cars that show they are members. If we were a secret society, you would not see this. The only "secrets" we will not divulge are the methods that we use to truly recognize one another. Those are certain handshakes and words used so that a Mason knows he is indeed talking to another Mason, and the reason for this is that Masons know that generally other Masons can be trusted because they share ideals.
So I hope that begins to answer your question. The short answer is that we are a very old fraternity dedicated to improving ourselves and our communities.

Many of our founding fathers and signers of the declaration of Independence were free masons.
George Washington for one and they laying of the first block of the white house was a Free mason ritual led by George Washington.
They were an open society until a scandal forced them to be seclusive.
Much like the Skull and Bones Society which George W. Bush was a member.
I would say that you should do more research on this and come up with your own opinions.

Masons outfitted all the full homes and church homes that we see to-day some were indentured or apprenticed and some were loose to do what ever artwork became available. The catholic church did not like that as they needed them in ordinary words to artwork for the church so that they began to type loose resorts of loose Masons like a union of to-day. in recent times any guy over 21yrs can connect those loose resorts as loose Masons. And because it became usually in ordinary words men who were builders that they maintain the custom of in ordinary words having men of their craft (could i as a guy flow to a properly lady hospital or a woman's help seem after i don't believe of so) as you will locate there is not any secret behind what they do (i could SAY a similar about lady'S help SHELTERS) and someone would trust that they to are a secret society. To every person who Say's all loose masons are wealthy attempt living on £80 3-50 a week and say you're wealthy, in happiness and kinfolk certain i'm wealthy, yet as for wealth take a stroke and live to inform the tale on advantages in Britain. To muktar replace Freedom with Anarchy, and regulation and order with terrorism, hasn't ever been portion of Freemasonry except on your terrorist questioning ideas. Your way of questioning creates suicide bombers and others to imagine the alternative of the truth.

Freemasonry is a fraternal organization whose membership is held together by shared moral and metaphysical ideals and—in most of its branches—by a constitutional declaration of belief in a Supreme Being.[
