I smoked since i was 13 years old 20 years later I have quit. My senses have come back to me slowly. I feel a lot better now. Clearer about things, enjoying life without being in a haze all the time. I think I will recover.

Yes, without a doubt! After smoking daily for about 12 years, I started to suffer with depression and my memory was shot. (6 months of pills to boost my ceratonin levels and 12 months off work sorted my depression.) I don't think I got lazy as much as thoughtfull. This thoughtfullness caused me to change my life and career, which in hindsite, I think was for the better. I have however, seen more cases where people have suffered long term mental illnesses from smoking it, than non smokers.
Mary Jane is not physically addictive, but it definately is mentally addictive. If I try to give up, I find I can't sleep at night (Unless I'm drunk). It does not lead to other drugs, its just that some people have addictive personalities and want to try everything. Chances are they smoked pot first, since it's the most widespread and easist to obtain.
Pot smokers probably do appear boring, because they suffer from 'Cant be Arsed Syndrome'. My mates probably think I've missed out by not going to the pub, but I've been more than content sat at home with a spliff. Looking back though, I've done a lot of getting stoned and not much else, wish I'm sure I'll come to regret.
Before committing yourself to a life as a pot-head, bear a thought for my friend, who's just burried his ex-long-term-smoking brother. He died at 52 from a cancer in his tongue.

As to whether it alters your brain chemistry, a cup of coffee, talking to a pretty woman, looking at a pleasant vista and drinking diet cola, all will alter your brain chemistry. Brain chemistry is not a static thing, it is altering all the time just by walking down the road. If you do any substance 24/7 it will screw you up, Have a couple of days a week free and do not listen to paranoid scare stories about "Reefer Madness" It can trigger psychotic episodes but they go away after a nights sleep. You must have been smoking the wrong stuff.

It is no more dangerous than someone who drinks alcohol. If someone drinks in moderation they are fine, if they start drinking all the time and become an alcoholic then their persona changes. The same with marijuana, used in moderation it has no long term affects, but if someone stays stoned all the time they do become lazy, lethargic, and generally don't want to do anything. Much the same as an alcoholic. So when talking about the affects, compare it to legal substances already in use and you will see the differences are very few. And no, not everyone that gets high ends up doing crack, the same as not everyone that drinks beer and wine ends up drinking pure grain.

as far as spacey and forgetful are concerned, that's a definite yes. That's me! But I have also got a responsible job, a computer analyst job working for a bank. I went to college stoned, passed the hnd stoned, and can work stoned. Okay things take a bit longer, but I get them done. Drugs affect different people in different ways. The law is there to protect those too stupid to see that it's screwing them up. We all know cannabis only affects the person smoking it but alcohol affects everyone around you.

The idea that weed is physically addictive is inane. It is psychologically addictive without a doubt. However, there are no withdrawal symptoms for weed save for the urge to have more to calm ones anxiety. Unlike alcohol, the worst drug in the world (and highly addictive) weed produces no harmful withdraws like coma or death.
As far as causing someone to go mad that is as likely as one being struck by lightning. It reminds me of the old scare movies produced by the government in the 60's. It can make one lazy and irresponsible - and forgetful as far as short term memory is concerned.
I smoked it for 13 years before quitting. I had no withdrawal symptoms, I am nor have I ever been "mad" and I am successful, happy and am a supporter of a law that would legalize it. It is alcohol that needs to be outlawed.

sounds like Mental Pause When a man reaches a certain age it happens. I smoked pot for over 25 years and can say it did not have that effect on me. I quit a few years ago and the only thing I can see that has changed is I don't pee in my pants when I see a cop car with K9 on the side. or spend money on pot. I drink maybe one beer a day but not every day. It could be worse he could be addicted to R&S like some people I know lol Which utimatly causes more brain damage than pot.

it is down to the weed.... experiments have proven that never mind the amount of people in acute hospitals who have a drug problem and psychosis..... now and again use i think can be ok, it really just does depend on the persons personality.. but a lot of use can and does affect peoples personality and memory. Please try and help your friends to come off it, addaction is a voluntary organisation that could help them.....
psychotic episodes dont go away after a nights sleep!!!! how stupid.. i have looked after many 16-28yr olds who had it brought on by weed and it can last weeks and weeks... some people it will affect them there whole lives.. and they will never be the same again.... its so sad...

Yes it definitely alters the personality. It makes people very very boring. Fortunately it is surprisingly easy to give up, and here's the magical thing. When you give it up, all your smoking friends cut you out of their lives and you don't have to listen to them mumbling about the Grateful Dead all night.
Hash smokers are notoriously negative and here's why, they keep seeing SNAGS in everything, as an excuse for not actually DOING anything.

I have made the same observation that users have become "totally mad," "paranoid," and/or "spacey." Also, I believe it is psychologically addictive, but mostly I have noticed that it is a gateway drug to other drugs that can do worse to the brain. The sad thing is that most users will deny this and believe it to only be beneficial.
