Yesterday I and my 24-year-old girlfriend were in restaurant. We were talking about chewing gums. She told me that it isn't dangerous to swallow a chewing gum. When we were talking she was chewing a gum. She told me that she will swallow her gum right now and nothing will happen. She slowly took the gum back toward her throat, made a gulp and swallowed her chewing gum. Then she told me that she had already swallowed her gum and couldn't feel it anymore. She told me that swallowed gum couldn't hurt her so not to worry. Then we left the restaurant and talked about other issues. She later told me that there is nothing dangerous, she couldn't feel the gum anymore and she has no stomachache . . . She told me that it is in her stomach and then will come out and laughed. So isn't it dangerous? Is she really right?

Nope, not dangerous at all. The FDA would not allow something that was dangerous to be chewed, without warning labels on the package.

of course it's not dangerous... when the gum gets to her stomach it won't cause anything and it will just , eventually , come out...she's really right- I watched a show about it and there were some people that swallowed gums and nothing happened to them... after all it happened to me a million times... think of it on this way- if chewing gums were really that dangerous they would be forbidden...

I have always swallowed chewing gum and never ever anything happened to me. It's all a misconception!! If you know that your stomach can digest meat and bones...why wouldn't it swallow a chewing gum! Simply, if it can't swallow it it will leave it as is....believe me Once I swallowed a tooth crown...and it appeared after couple of days....not even scratched!

one piece every once in awhile shouldn't be a problem, lots of kids do it all the time.

I knew a girl that swallowed chewing gum on a more regular basis...like every day...and that much did cause her a problem. She required surgery to fix things, but she swallowed every piece of chewing gum she ever got.

I hear that it takes 7 years for it to digest. But, then I was told also that if you make a funny face with your hands, your face will freeze. I was like 7 when that happened. People tell you crazy things. Not sure on the the chewing gum factor.

It's not dangerous. Parents just tell kids that because if kids try to swallow a large wad of gum they can choke on it.

If swallowing gum was dangerous, i'd be dead. When I was a kid I never spit my gum out. Always swallowed it. Still here 44 years later.

According to: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/digestive-system/AN01006

"No, it's not harmful to swallow chewing gum. The body doesn't digest gum, so the gum passes through the digestive tract relatively intact and is excreted through the stool."
